HPM Al-Vida is a selective, systemic herbicide containing Pyrazosulfuron Ethyl 10% WP as its active ingredient. It is specifically designed for weed control in paddy (transplanted rice) fields. This herbicide belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical group and works by inhibiting the ALS (acetolactate synthase) enzyme, which is essential for weed growth and development.
Al-Vida is effective against a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds and sedges commonly found in paddy fields, including Cyperus iria, Cyperus difformis, Fimbristylis miliacea, Ludwigia parviflora, and Monochoria vaginalis. It can be used in both nursery beds and main fields, providing comprehensive weed management throughout the rice growing cycle. The product is absorbed by weed roots and leaves, making it highly effective even in standing water conditions typical of paddy cultivation.
With its selective action, Al-Vida targets weeds without harming rice seedlings. The rice plant naturally breaks down the chemical quickly, ensuring crop safety. It is also safe for beneficial soil microorganisms and has no adverse effect on soil physico-chemical properties. The product carries a Blue/Green Triangle toxicity label (slightly toxic) and is classified under IRAC MoA Group B (ALS Inhibitor).
Key Benefits
- Effectively controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds and sedges in both nursery and main paddy fields
- Selective action ensures complete safety for rice seedlings while destroying weeds
- Weeds stop growing within hours of application and die completely within 1-3 weeks
- Safe for beneficial soil microorganisms that support plant health
- Works effectively in standing water conditions common in paddy fields
- No adverse effect on soil physico-chemical properties or microbial activities
- Suitable for most crop rotation systems with no residual effect on following crops
- Reduces dependency on manual weeding, saving labour and time
How It Works
HPM Al-Vida works by starving weeds from the inside out. The active ingredient Pyrazosulfuron Ethyl is a systemic herbicide that is rapidly absorbed by both the roots and leaves of weeds. Once absorbed, it moves through the plant's vascular system to reach the growing points (meristems).
The herbicide acts as an ALS (Acetolactate Synthase) enzyme inhibitor. It blocks the biosynthesis of essential amino acids - valine and isoleucine - that weeds need to produce proteins for growth and cell division. Without these essential proteins, the weed stops growing within hours of application. The weed gradually turns yellow, and complete death occurs within 1 to 3 weeks.
The selectivity of Al-Vida comes from the rice plant's ability to rapidly metabolise (break down) the chemical through demethylation of the methoxy group. This means the rice crop safely breaks down the herbicide while weeds cannot, making it highly effective yet crop-safe. The product is classified under IRAC MoA Group B (ALS Inhibitor) and belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical group.

When to Use
Apply HPM Al-Vida between 3 to 10 days after transplanting rice seedlings. The product works best when weeds are small and at the 2-leaf stage. Early application ensures better coverage and more effective control before weeds become established and compete with the crop for nutrients, sunlight, and space.
For nursery beds, apply when weeds begin to emerge. For the main field, the ideal window is post-emergence, 3-7 days after transplanting. Maintain standing water of 2-3 cm depth in the field for 5 to 7 days after application. This helps spread the herbicide to weed roots and ensures uniform distribution across the field.
The product is effective against both pre-emergence and early post-emergence weeds. It works well as part of an integrated weed management program and can complement pre-emergent herbicide strategies for sustainable paddy cultivation.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Prepare the field: Ensure the field has standing water of 2-3 cm depth. The water should not be flowing or draining out.
- Measure the dose: Use 80 g per acre for main field application. For nursery, use 8-10 g per 1000 sq.ft.
- Mixing method 1 (Broadcast with sand/urea): Mix the measured quantity of Al-Vida with 10 kg of dry sand or urea. Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the herbicide.
- Mixing method 2 (Spray): Mix the required dose in 150-240 litres of water per acre (depending on dosage). Stir well to ensure the powder dissolves completely.
- Application: For broadcast method, manually spread the sand/urea mixture evenly across the field. For spray method, use a knapsack sprayer with a flat fan nozzle and apply evenly.
- Post-application care: Maintain standing water (2-3 cm) in the field for 5 to 7 days after application. Do not drain or let the water overflow.
- Wait before harvest: Observe the pre-harvest interval of 60-95 days (depending on dosage used) before harvesting the crop.
Compatibility
HPM Al-Vida is compatible with most common herbicides and fertilizers used in paddy cultivation. It integrates well with pre-emergent herbicide programs for sustainable weed management. However, it is recommended to perform a jar test before large-scale mixing with any new product. Do not mix with alkaline substances or products that may reduce efficacy.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, mask, goggles, and boots during handling and application
- Avoid inhalation of dust while mixing the powder
- Prevent drift to non-target crops, water bodies, and grazing areas
- Wash hands and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use
- Store in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture
- Keep out of reach of children, pets, and livestock
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying the product
- Dispose of empty containers properly - do not reuse for any purpose
- Prevent contamination of ponds, wells, and other water sources
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
HPM Al-Vida is selective and safe for transplanted rice when used at recommended doses. The rice plant naturally metabolises the active ingredient quickly, preventing any phytotoxic effects. No adverse effects on soil physico-chemical properties or microbial activities have been reported. The product is non-toxic to beneficial soil microorganisms. For heavy grass infestations, Al-Vida is primarily a specialist for sedges and broadleaf weeds and may need to be used alongside grass-specific herbicides.
