Best Agrolife Ghotu is a broad-spectrum systemic insecticide containing Clothianidin 50% WG (Wettable Granule). It belongs to the neonicotinoid group of insecticides and is designed to provide effective control of a wide range of sucking insect pests in major Indian crops. Ghotu works by disrupting the nervous system of target pests, leading to paralysis and death. Its systemic action means the insecticide is absorbed by the plant and moves throughout its tissues, offering protection from the inside out.

Ghotu is recommended for use on grapes, cotton, sugarcane, tea, and rice. It effectively controls pests such as thrips, jassids, whitefly, aphids, mealybugs, termites, shoot borer, brown plant hopper (BPH), and tea mosquito bug (Helopeltis theivora). The product can be applied through both foliar spray and soil drench methods, giving farmers flexibility based on crop type, pest pressure, and growth stage. With its long residual activity and quick knockdown effect, Ghotu helps reduce pest damage, improve crop health, and support better yields.

Ghotu is formulated as a wettable granule (WG) that mixes easily with water and disperses well for uniform application. It is manufactured by Best Agrolife Limited, an Indian company, and has a shelf life of 2 years when stored properly. The product is safe for vertebrates when used as per label recommendations, making it a reliable choice for integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Key Benefits

  • Provides effective control of a wide range of sucking pests including thrips, jassids, whitefly, aphids, mealybugs, and brown plant hopper in one product
  • Systemic action ensures the insecticide is absorbed and moves within the plant, protecting new growth and hard-to-reach areas
  • Quick knockdown effect stops pest damage rapidly after application
  • Long residual activity means fewer sprays are needed, saving time and labour costs
  • Can be applied as both foliar spray and soil drench, offering flexibility for different crops and pest situations
  • Helps improve crop health, quality, and overall yield by reducing pest damage throughout the growing season
  • Easy-to-mix wettable granule formulation disperses well in water for uniform spray coverage

How It Works

Ghotu contains Clothianidin 50% WG, which belongs to the neonicotinoid class of insecticides. Neonicotinoids work by targeting the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect's nervous system. When pests come into contact with or ingest the insecticide, it binds to these receptors and causes continuous nerve stimulation. This leads to uncontrolled nerve firing, paralysis, and eventually death of the pest.

Clothianidin has strong systemic properties. When applied as a foliar spray, it is absorbed through the leaf surface and moves upward within the plant's vascular system (xylem). When applied as a soil drench, it is taken up by the roots and translocated to all parts of the plant including stems, leaves, and new growth. This systemic movement ensures that even pests feeding on untreated plant parts or hiding in protected areas are exposed to the insecticide.

The product works through both contact and ingestion modes. Pests that come into direct contact with the spray droplets are affected immediately, while those that feed on treated plant tissues ingest the insecticide and are controlled within a short time. This dual mode of action makes Ghotu highly effective against sucking pests that feed on plant sap, as they ingest the active ingredient while feeding. The long residual activity of Clothianidin continues to protect the crop for an extended period after application, reducing the need for frequent re-spraying.

Recommended Dosage & Application

The dosage and application method vary depending on the crop, target pest, and crop stage. Below are the recommended dosages based on available data:

RiceBrown Plant Hopper (BPH)Foliar Spray10-12 g20-24 g500 LAs per pest infestation

Note: For foliar spray on cotton, the dosage range is 15-20 g a.i./ha (30-40 g formulation/ha) in 500 L water. Always use the recommended dosage as per pest severity and crop stage. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

When to Use

Apply Ghotu at the first sign of pest infestation for best results. Early detection and timely application help prevent pest populations from reaching damaging levels. For grapes, apply as a soil drench during the vegetative growth and fruit setting stage. For cotton, sugarcane, tea, and rice, apply based on pest appearance and crop stage.

For foliar sprays, apply during early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are lower and beneficial insect activity (especially bees) is minimal. Avoid spraying during hot afternoon hours or when rain is expected within 4-6 hours of application, as this may reduce effectiveness. For soil drench applications, ensure the soil has adequate moisture for proper root uptake and systemic movement of the insecticide.

Monitor crops regularly for pest buildup. Re-apply if needed based on pest pressure and residual activity duration, but follow the recommended intervals and do not exceed the total number of applications per season as per label instructions.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

For Foliar Spray:

  1. Fill the spray tank with half the required amount of clean water.
  2. Add the recommended amount of Ghotu (see dosage table above) to the tank while stirring continuously.
  3. Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly until the granules are fully dispersed.
  4. Spray uniformly on both upper and lower surfaces of leaves, ensuring complete coverage of the plant canopy.
  5. Use the spray mixture within 24 hours of preparation. Do not store the diluted mixture.

For Soil Drench:

  1. Mix the recommended amount of Ghotu in the required volume of water (see dosage table).
  2. Stir well to ensure complete dispersion of the granules.
  3. Apply the solution evenly around the base of the plants or in the root zone area.
  4. Ensure the soil has adequate moisture before application for better root uptake.

General Precautions During Application:

  • Wear protective clothing including gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and spraying.
  • Avoid spraying on windy days to prevent drift to non-target areas.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application.
  • Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
