Crystal Missile is a modern, water-soluble granular insecticide from the Avermectin group, containing Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG as its active ingredient. It is designed to provide effective control of a wide range of chewing and sucking pests including caterpillars, bollworms, fruit and shoot borers, pod borers, diamond back moth, thrips, and mites across many important crops.
This insecticide works through both contact and stomach action. When pests come in contact with or ingest the spray residue, they stop feeding quickly and die within 2–4 days. Crystal Missile has a unique translaminar property — it penetrates leaf tissues and forms a reservoir inside the leaf. This means it can control pests feeding on the underside of leaves, which many contact-only sprays cannot reach.
Crystal Missile is suitable for use in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs because it targets harmful pests while being safer for beneficial insects when used as directed. It is registered for use on cotton, okra, cabbage, chilli, brinjal, red gram, chickpea, tea, and grapes, and is also used on tomato and pigeon pea.
Key Benefits
- Quick stop to crop damage — Caterpillars stop feeding within 2 hours of application, reducing further crop loss immediately.
- Translaminar action protects hidden pests — Penetrates leaf tissues to control caterpillars and pests on the lower surface of leaves that ordinary sprays miss.
- Rain-fast after 4 hours — Once dried on the leaf surface, light rainfall does not wash away the effectiveness, giving reliable field performance.
- Dual mode of action — Works through both contact and stomach action, ensuring pests are controlled whether they touch the spray or eat treated leaves.
- Long-lasting residual control — Provides extended protection, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
- Suitable for IPM — Selective action helps preserve beneficial insects and fits well into integrated pest management programs.
- Broad spectrum control — Effective against bollworms, fruit borers, pod borers, diamond back moth, thrips, mites, and tea looper in one product.
How It Works
Crystal Missile contains Emamectin Benzoate, which belongs to the Avermectin chemical family. It acts on the nervous system of insects by disrupting chloride ion channels at GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and H-glutamate receptor sites. This causes an uncontrolled flow of chloride ions, leading to paralysis of the insect's muscle system.
When applied as a foliar spray, the insecticide is absorbed into the leaf tissue through its translaminar activity. This creates a reservoir of active ingredient inside the leaf, so even pests feeding on the underside of leaves or inside leaf folds are exposed to the chemical. The insecticide works primarily through stomach action — meaning the pest must ingest treated plant material for best results, though contact action also contributes.
Affected larvae become paralyzed and stop feeding within about 2 hours of exposure. Although they may remain on the plant for a short time, they cause no further damage. Death typically occurs within 2–4 days after application.

Method: Dissolve the recommended dose in clean water and apply as a foliar spray ensuring thorough coverage of the crop canopy, including the underside of leaves.
When to Use
Apply Crystal Missile at the first signs of pest infestation or when pest population reaches economic threshold levels. For best results, apply during early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are lower and pests are actively feeding. Avoid application during heavy rainfall or when rain is expected within 4 hours, as the product requires about 4 hours to dry and become rain-fast.
For caterpillars and borers, apply when larvae are in early instar stages (young and small) for maximum effectiveness. For thrips and mites on chilli and grapes, apply at the onset of infestation. On cotton, apply when bollworm egg hatching or young larvae are observed. On cabbage, apply at the first sign of diamond back moth damage. The product works best when pests ingest treated foliage, so ensure good spray coverage on all plant parts.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Calculate the dose: Check the dosage table above and measure the required amount of Crystal Missile granules for your crop and pest.
- Prepare the spray solution: Fill the spray tank with half the required amount of clean water. Add the measured granules and stir well until fully dissolved. Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly.
- Spray application: Use a clean, well-maintained sprayer with proper nozzles. Apply as a foliar spray, covering all parts of the plant including the underside of leaves where pests often hide.
- Timing: Apply in the morning or evening when temperatures are mild. Avoid spraying in direct midday sun or when rain is expected within 4 hours.
- Clean up: After spraying, thoroughly wash the sprayer and all equipment with clean water. Dispose of empty containers safely — do not reuse for any other purpose.
- Re-entry: Wait at least 24 hours before entering the treated field without protective gear.
Compatibility
Crystal Missile is generally compatible with most commonly used chemical insecticides. However, it is always advisable to conduct a small jar test before mixing with other products on a large scale. Mix in the correct order: wettable powders first, then suspension concentrates, then soluble granules like Crystal Missile, and finally emulsifiable concentrates. Do not mix with alkaline substances as this may reduce effectiveness.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal protection: Wear gloves, mask, goggles, and full-body clothing while handling and spraying the product.
- During spraying: Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying the product.
- After spraying: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing separately before reuse.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep away from food, feed, and drinking water. Store out of reach of children and animals.
- Environmental care: Do not allow spray drift to contaminate water bodies, ponds, or wells. Avoid spraying on flowering plants when bees are actively foraging.
- Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers. Dispose of them safely by crushing or burying away from water sources.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
Crystal Missile is generally safe for crops when used at recommended dosages. It is an eye irritant — avoid contact with eyes. Early symptoms of poisoning may include dilation of pupils, muscular incoordination, unsteady movement (ataxia), and muscle tremors. If any such symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately. The product is classified under the Yellow toxicity category (moderately toxic).
