Crystal Penoxa is a selective, post-emergence broad-spectrum herbicide manufactured by Crystal Crop Protection Ltd. It contains Penoxsulam 21.7% SC (Suspension Concentrate) as the active ingredient, belonging to the triazolopyrimidine chemical group. This herbicide is specifically designed for use in transplanted paddy (rice) to effectively control a wide range of weeds including grasses, sedges, and broad-leaf weeds.
Crystal Penoxa works by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is essential for weed growth. When applied to the foliage of actively growing weeds, it is absorbed by the leaves and roots, then moves throughout the weed plant to stop growth at the growing points. Weeds stop growing soon after application and gradually die off, giving your paddy crop a clean field to grow without competition for water, nutrients, and sunlight.
This herbicide is available in multiple pack sizes including 37.5 ml, 150 ml, 250 ml, making it suitable for small and large farms alike. The recommended dosage is 37.5 ml per acre, applied as a foliar spray. With a re-entry period of just 24 hours after spraying, it offers convenience and safety for farmers. Crystal Penoxa is a trusted solution for paddy farmers looking for effective, easy-to-use weed management.
Key Benefits
- Controls a broad spectrum of weeds including grasses, sedges, and broad-leaf weeds in a single application
- Selective herbicide — targets weeds without harming the transplanted paddy crop
- Post-emergence action — can be applied after weeds have emerged, giving flexibility in timing
- Systemic action — absorbed by leaves and roots, moves throughout the weed for complete control
- Low dosage requirement — only 37.5 ml per acre, making it economical per application
- Quick re-entry — fields can be entered just 24 hours after spraying, reducing downtime
- Available in multiple pack sizes to suit different farm sizes and budgets
How It Works
Crystal Penoxa contains Penoxsulam, which belongs to the triazolopyrimidine chemical group of herbicides. It works by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, a key enzyme required for the production of essential amino acids (valine, leucine, and isoleucine) in weeds. Without these amino acids, the weed plants cannot produce proteins needed for growth and development.
When sprayed on the foliage of actively growing weeds, Penoxsulam is rapidly absorbed through the leaves and also taken up by the roots from the soil. It then moves systemically through both the xylem and phloem, reaching the growing points (meristems) of the weed. Once inside the weed, it stops cell division and growth at the growing points.
Visible symptoms include the cessation of weed growth within a few days, followed by yellowing, reddening, and gradual death of the weed plants over 1 to 3 weeks. Because it is selective, the paddy crop remains unaffected at the recommended dosage. The suspension concentrate (SC) formulation ensures good coverage and retention on weed foliage, improving overall efficacy.

Recommended Dosage & Application
| Crop | Target Weeds | Dosage per Acre | Dilution / Water Volume | Method |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transplanted Paddy (Rice) | Grasses, Sedges, Broad-leaf weeds | 37.5 ml per acre | Mix in sufficient water for uniform foliar spray (typically 150-200 litres per acre) | Foliar spray (post-emergence) |
Application Method: Apply as a uniform foliar spray on actively growing weeds. Ensure good coverage of weed foliage for best results.
When to Use
Crystal Penoxa is a post-emergence herbicide, meaning it should be applied after the weeds have emerged and are actively growing. For best results in transplanted paddy:
- Apply when weeds are young and actively growing — typically 15 to 25 days after transplanting of paddy
- Ensure the field has proper moisture but is not flooded at the time of application
- Drain excess water from the field before spraying for better weed exposure and herbicide contact
- Do not apply when rain is expected within 4-6 hours, as this may wash off the spray
- Apply during calm weather conditions to avoid spray drift to non-target areas
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Prepare the field: Drain excess water from the paddy field so that weeds are visible and accessible. The field should be moist but not flooded.
- Measure the correct dose: Use 37.5 ml of Crystal Penoxa per acre. Use a clean measuring cup for accurate measurement.
- Mix with water: Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Add the measured herbicide and mix well. Then add the remaining water and stir again to ensure uniform mixing.
- Spray uniformly: Use a clean, well-maintained knapsack sprayer or power sprayer. Apply the mixture as a fine, uniform spray over the weed foliage. Ensure all weeds are thoroughly covered.
- Post-application: After 24 hours, normal field operations including re-entry can resume. Re-flood the field 2-3 days after spraying if needed.
- Clean equipment: Thoroughly wash all spray equipment with clean water after use. Do not dispose of wash water in water bodies or near drinking water sources.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles while handling and spraying the herbicide
- Avoid inhalation of spray mist — use a face mask or respirator during mixing and spraying
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product
- Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use
- Keep the product away from children, pets, and livestock
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture
- Do not contaminate ponds, rivers, or other water bodies with the product or its container
- Do not use the empty container for storing food or drinking water
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
Penoxsulam has very low toxicity to mammals. It may cause slight temporary eye irritation — corneal injury is unlikely. Prolonged skin contact is essentially non-irritant and unlikely to result in absorption of harmful amounts. No adverse effects are anticipated from a single exposure to mist. Harmful effects are not anticipated from swallowing small amounts. As with all herbicides, use only at the recommended dosage to avoid any risk to the crop.
PHI / REI & Storage
- REI (Re-entry Interval): 24 hours after spraying
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, and food/feed materials
- Container: Keep in original container with lid tightly closed
