Crystal Predator is a broad-spectrum insecticide from Crystal Crop Protection containing Chlorpyrifos 50% EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate). It belongs to the organophosphorus group of chemicals and is widely used for controlling a range of chewing and sucking pests in major crops like cotton and paddy, as well as for termite control in buildings and wood structures.

Predator works through three modes of action — contact, stomach, and fumigation. This triple action makes it effective against pests that are hard to reach, such as stem borers hiding inside plant stems and termites deep in the soil. The 50% EC formulation is twice as concentrated as standard 20% EC formulations, meaning farmers need less product per acre for effective control.

This insecticide is classified under IRAC MoA Group 1B (Organophosphates) and carries a Yellow Triangle toxicity label, indicating it is highly toxic. It must be handled with proper safety precautions. Predator is suitable for both agricultural use (foliar spray on crops) and non-agricultural use (pre-construction and post-construction termite treatment in buildings).

Key Benefits

  • Triple action control — Kills pests through contact, stomach poisoning, and fumigation (vapor action), ensuring thorough coverage above and below ground
  • Effective against hidden pests — Fumigation action reaches stem borers inside paddy stems and termites in soil tunnels where ordinary sprays cannot reach
  • Long-lasting residual protection — Binds to soil particles to create a lasting chemical barrier against termites and soil-borne pests
  • Cost-effective concentration — 50% EC formulation requires lower dosage per acre compared to 20% EC products, saving on handling and logistics
  • Fast knockdown action — Rapidly paralyses pests on contact by disrupting their nervous system, reducing crop damage quickly
  • Versatile use — Suitable for both crop protection (cotton, paddy) and structural termite control (pre and post construction)
  • Effective under heavy infestation — Reliable performance even when pest pressure is high, making it a trusted choice for serious infestations

How It Works

Crystal Predator contains Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphorus compound that acts as a nerve poison for insects. When the pest comes into contact with the chemical, ingests it by feeding on treated plant parts, or inhales its vapors, the active ingredient enters the insect's body and inhibits an essential enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE).

This enzyme is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a chemical that transmits nerve signals. When AChE is blocked, acetylcholine builds up in the insect's nerve junctions, causing continuous nerve firing. This leads to uncontrolled movement, paralysis, and eventually death of the pest within a short time.

The product has three distinct ways of reaching pests:
1. Contact action — The solvent in the formulation helps the toxin penetrate the insect's outer skin immediately upon spraying.
2. Stomach action — When chewing pests like caterpillars and bollworms eat treated leaves or bolls, they ingest the poison.
3. Fumigation (vapor) action — The chemical releases toxic vapors that enter the breathing pores (spiracles) of pests hiding inside stems, leaf sheaths, or soil crevices.

This triple mode of action makes Predator highly effective even against pests that have developed partial resistance to other insecticides.

Method of Application: Foliar spray for crops. Soil application / drenching / surface treatment for termite control.

Note: Dosage may vary based on crop stage, soil condition, and pest pressure. Always follow the label instructions for your specific crop and region.

When to Use

For crops: Apply Predator as soon as pest infestation is noticed and when the pest population reaches the economic threshold level (for example, around 5% crop damage). Early-stage application gives the best results. For best effectiveness, spray during the cooler hours of the day — early morning or late afternoon. Avoid spraying during peak mid-day heat or when bees are actively foraging. Do not apply on windy days or when rain is expected, as this can cause spray drift or wash-off.

For termite control: For pre-construction treatment, apply during the foundation-laying stage. For post-construction treatment, apply when termite activity is observed. Ensure the soil has adequate moisture for soil application to work effectively.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare the spray solution: Fill the spray tank with half the required amount of clean water. Add the measured quantity of Predator insecticide as per the recommended dose. Mix thoroughly. Add the remaining water and stir well.
  2. Add adjuvant (recommended): For better results, mix a spreader or sticker (adjuvant) with the spray solution to improve coverage and sticking on plant surfaces.
  3. Use high-volume spray: Use a knapsack sprayer or high-volume sprayer to ensure thorough coverage. Apply enough spray solution so that it drips down to the soil and stem base where pests hide.
  4. For termite treatment: Mix 1 litre of Predator in 99 litres of water (10 ml per litre) to make a 0.5% emulsion. Apply to foundation trenches, soil around buildings, or affected wood surfaces.
  5. Spray timing: Apply during early morning or late afternoon. Avoid spraying during windy conditions or when rain is expected.
  6. Post-application: Do not enter the treated field immediately. Wash hands and equipment thoroughly after use. Follow the PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval) before harvesting treated crops.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a mask, goggles, and protective clothing while handling and spraying Predator. Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes, and inhalation of spray mist.
  • Keep away from food and water: Store the product away from food, feed, drinking water sources, and animal areas. Do not contaminate ponds, rivers, or other water bodies.
  • Toxic to fish and aquatic life: Do not use in paddy fields used for fish farming (pisciculture). Avoid spray drift reaching water bodies.
  • Harmful to beneficial insects: Predator is a broad-spectrum insecticide and can harm pollinators like bees. Spray during early morning or late evening when bees are less active.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers for any purpose. Dispose of them safely as per local guidelines.
  • First aid: In case of accidental poisoning, seek immediate medical attention. The specific antidotes are Atropine Sulphate and 2-PAM (Pralidoxime), to be administered by a qualified doctor only.
