Overview

Encounter is a broad-spectrum insecticide from Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL) that combines two powerful active ingredients — Emamectin Benzoate 3% and Thiamethoxam 12% — in a Water Dispersible Granule (WG) formulation. This dual-action insecticide is designed to control both chewing pests (caterpillars, borers, loopers) and sucking pests (aphids, jassids, thrips, whiteflies) in one spray. It is suitable for use on Tea, Cotton, Pulses, Chilli, and other vegetables.

Encounter works through contact, systemic, and translaminar action. The Emamectin Benzoate component causes rapid paralysis and stops feeding in caterpillars within hours, while Thiamethoxam acts on the nervous system of sucking pests, causing tremors and death. The systemic movement of the product travels upward through the plant, protecting new growth that develops after spraying. Encounter also exhibits a phytotonic effect, promoting greener and healthier leaves, which is especially valuable for Tea and vegetable crops.

The WG formulation dissolves easily in water without dust, making it safer and more convenient for farmers to handle and mix. Encounter is rainfast within 2 to 4 hours of application, ensuring that your investment is not lost to unexpected rain. With its strong synergistic effect, it provides long-duration control and helps manage pests that have developed resistance to single-chemical sprays.

Key Benefits

  • Dual-action pest control: Simultaneously controls chewing pests (caterpillars, bollworms, loopers) and sucking pests (aphids, jassids, thrips) in a single spray — saving time and labour.
  • Rapid stop to crop damage: Pests stop feeding within hours of application due to immediate paralysis from Emamectin Benzoate, reducing further crop loss.
  • Systemic & translaminar protection: The product moves inside the plant and reaches hidden pests on the underside of leaves and new growth that was not directly sprayed.
  • Rainfast within 2-4 hours: Once dried and absorbed into the leaf, rain cannot wash it away — giving farmers confidence even in unpredictable weather.
  • Phytotonic effect for healthier crops: Beyond pest control, Encounter promotes greener leaves and better plant vigour, improving visual quality of produce like Tea and vegetables.
  • Dust-free WG formulation: Water Dispersible Granules dissolve quickly, do not clog spray nozzles, and are safer to handle than dusty powder formulations.
  • Long-lasting control: Strong synergistic effect between the two active ingredients provides extended protection, reducing the need for frequent sprays.

How It Works

Encounter uses two distinct modes of action that work together to provide complete pest control and help prevent resistance development.

1. Nerve Paralysis (Emamectin Benzoate): Emamectin Benzoate belongs to the Avermectin chemical group (IRAC Group 6). It activates chloride channels in the nerve cells of insects. This causes an influx of chloride ions, leading to irreversible paralysis. The affected larvae stop feeding immediately — usually within hours — and eventually die. This action is especially effective against lepidopteran pests like bollworms, fruit borers, and loopers.

2. Nervous System Overload (Thiamethoxam): Thiamethoxam belongs to the Neonicotinoid chemical group (IRAC Group 4A). It mimics acetylcholine, a natural neurotransmitter, in the insect's brain. This over-stimulates the nervous system, causing uncontrollable tremors, convulsions, and rapid death. This action is highly effective against sucking pests like aphids, jassids, thrips, and whiteflies.

3. Systemic & Translaminar Movement: Once applied, Thiamethoxam is rapidly absorbed by the plant and moves upward through the xylem (systemic action). This protects new leaves and shoots that grow after spraying. Additionally, the product has translaminar activity, meaning it penetrates leaf tissues to reach pests feeding on the underside of leaves — where contact sprays often cannot reach.

This combination of two different modes of action creates a powerful synergistic effect, making Encounter effective even against pest populations that have developed resistance to older, single-chemical insecticides.

Recommended Dosage & Application

CropDose (g/Acre)Water (L/Acre)Dose (g/Litre)PHI (Days)
Tea60 - 80 g200 L0.3 - 0.4 g7 Days
Pulses / Vegetables80 - 100 g200 L0.5 g7 - 10 Days

Note: PHI = Pre-Harvest Interval — the minimum number of days to wait between the last spray and harvesting. Dosage is in grams as this is a granule formulation. In case of high pest infestation, use the higher end of the dosage range.

When to Use

Apply Encounter when you first notice pest activity or when the pest population crosses the Economic Threshold Level (ETL). For bollworms and fruit borers, early application at the flowering stage is most effective. The product can be used at any stage of crop growth. For best results, spray during the cooler parts of the day — early morning or late evening — to avoid rapid evaporation and to protect beneficial insects like bees. Avoid spraying during active bee foraging hours as Thiamethoxam is toxic to bees. Encounter is rainfast within 2 to 4 hours of application, so check the weather forecast and apply when no rain is expected for at least 4 hours after spraying.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Calculate the dose: Measure the required quantity of Encounter granules based on your crop and acreage using the dosage table above.
  2. Premix (slurry preparation): Take a small mug or bucket with about 1-2 litres of clean water. Add the measured granules and stir well to form a smooth slurry. This ensures the granules dissolve completely without lumps.
  3. Fill the spray tank: Fill the spray tank with half the required water volume.
  4. Add the slurry: Pour the prepared slurry into the spray tank while stirring continuously.
  5. Top up with water: Add the remaining water to reach the total required volume. Stir or shake the tank well to ensure uniform mixing.
  6. Spray application: Use a hollow cone nozzle for best coverage. Spray thoroughly on both upper and lower surfaces of leaves, as pests often hide on the underside. Ensure complete coverage of the foliage.
  7. Post-application: Clean the spray equipment thoroughly after use. Do not drain or rinse near water bodies.

Compatibility

Encounter is generally compatible with common fungicides such as Hexaconazole and Mancozeb, as well as with most plant growth regulators. However, it is always recommended to conduct a small physical jar test before mixing any new combination. Mix small quantities of both products in a glass jar with water and observe for any signs of precipitation, gel formation, or separation. If the mixture remains uniform, it is safe to use. Do not mix with alkaline substances or copper-based fungicides unless compatibility is confirmed.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a face mask, and goggles while handling and spraying Encounter. Wear full-sleeved clothing and boots.
  • During spraying: Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying the product.
  • After spraying: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash your clothes separately before reusing.
  • Environmental safety: Encounter is toxic to aquatic life and bees. Do not spray near ponds, rivers, or water bodies. Avoid spraying during active bee foraging hours (spray in late evening).
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Do not store in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
  • Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers for any purpose. Dispose of them safely according to local regulations.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

When used as per the recommended dosage and application guidelines, Encounter is not phytotoxic to the target crops. The product has a phytotonic effect that promotes greener and healthier leaves. However, over-application or use under extreme weather conditions (very high temperature or drought stress) may cause unwanted effects. Always follow the recommended dose per acre for safe and effective results.
