Green Expert is a premium, broad-spectrum post-emergence herbicide developed by Insecticides India Ltd (IIL) for effective weed management in rice crops. It combines two powerful active ingredients — Bispyribac Sodium 9.5% and Penoxsulam 7.8% — in a Suspension Concentrate (SC) formulation. This dual-action herbicide is designed to control a wide range of grassy weeds, sedges, and broadleaf weeds in both transplanted rice and Direct Seeded Rice (DSR).
Weeds are one of the biggest challenges in rice farming. Uncontrolled weeds can reduce yield by 15% to 45% in transplanted rice and over 50% in DSR. Manual weeding is becoming expensive and labor-intensive, often costing up to ₹3,750 per acre. Green Expert offers a practical, cost-effective alternative — a single spray that clears grasses, sedges, and broadleaf weeds together, saving time, labor, and money. The product is absorbed through weed leaves and roots, moves systemically to growing points, and stops weed growth quickly. Weeds turn yellow within days and die completely within 2–3 weeks.
Green Expert is highly selective to rice crops, meaning it controls weeds without harming the paddy plants. Its SC formulation provides good rainfastness and sticks well to waxy weed leaves. With a recommended dose of just 100 ml per acre, it delivers effective control at a cost of approximately ₹655–₹670 per acre — about 20–25% of what manual weeding would cost.
Key Benefits
- Dual-action weed control: Two active ingredients (Bispyribac Sodium + Penoxsulam) work together to control tough weeds that single-molecule products may miss.
- Broad-spectrum coverage: Controls all three major weed types — grasses (like Barnyard grass), sedges, and broadleaf weeds — in one spray.
- Quick action: Weeds stop growing within hours of application. Visible yellowing appears in 3–5 days, with complete death in 14–21 days.
- Long-lasting residual effect: Suppresses new weed germination for weeks after spraying, keeping fields cleaner during critical crop stages.
- Crop-safe and selective: Rice plants rapidly metabolize the herbicide, staying healthy while weeds are controlled.
- Cost-effective: At around ₹655–₹670 per acre, it costs significantly less than manual weeding (up to ₹3,750 per acre).
- Rainfast formulation: The SC liquid sticks well to waxy weed leaves and resists wash-off from light rain.
How It Works
Green Expert works by disrupting the internal protein production system of weeds. Both active ingredients belong to the ALS inhibitor group (Group 2 as per IRAC classification), but they attack from two different chemical angles — Bispyribac Sodium is from the Pyrimidinyl carboxy group, while Penoxsulam is from the Triazolopyrimidine group.
When sprayed on weeds, the liquid is quickly absorbed through the leaves and roots. It then moves systemically through the plant's vascular system to reach the growing points — the tips of shoots and roots where new growth happens. Once inside the weed, the herbicide blocks the ALS enzyme, which is essential for producing three key amino acids: Valine, Leucine, and Isoleucine. Without these amino acids, the weed cannot make proteins needed for growth and survival.
The weed stops growing almost immediately after application. Within 3–5 days, you will see yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves. This is followed by browning (necrosis), and complete death occurs within 14–21 days. Because two different chemistries are combined, even weeds that may have developed partial resistance to one chemical are effectively controlled by the other.

When to Use
Apply Green Expert when weeds are in the 2–5 leaf stage. This is the most effective time because young, actively growing weeds absorb the herbicide better and are more susceptible to its action.
- For transplanted rice: Apply 10–20 days after transplanting (DAT).
- For Direct Seeded Rice (DSR): Apply 15–25 days after sowing (DAS).
- Applying too early (before weeds emerge) or too late (when weeds are mature) will reduce effectiveness.
- Ensure the field is drained of standing water before spraying so that weeds are fully exposed.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Drain the field: Remove standing water from the field to expose weeds fully. This is essential for the spray to reach weed leaves and bases.
- Prepare the spray solution: Fill the spray tank with half the required water (75 litres per acre). Add 100 ml of Green Expert and mix well. Add the remaining water (75 litres) and stir again to ensure uniform mixing.
- Use the right nozzle: Use a Flat Fan or Flood Jet nozzle for uniform coverage. Adjust the sprayer to produce a fine to medium spray.
- Spray uniformly: Apply the mixture evenly across the field, ensuring all weeds are covered. Do not miss patches.
- Reflood the field: After 48–72 hours of spraying, re-flood the field with water. This helps suppress new weed germination and supports rice growth.
- Clean equipment: Wash the sprayer thoroughly after use. Do not dispose of leftover solution in water bodies.
Compatibility
Green Expert is generally compatible with insecticides like Fipronil and Pyrethroids. However, strictly avoid mixing with Organophosphate insecticides (such as Malathion or Chlorpyrifos), as this combination can cause crop burn and damage the rice plants. If you need to use Organophosphates, maintain a gap of 7–10 days between spraying Green Expert and these insecticides. Always conduct a small jar test before mixing with any new product.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and spraying the product.
- During spraying: Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product.
- After use: Wash hands, face, and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Environmental care: Avoid spray drift to nearby water bodies, ponds, or non-target crops. Do not contaminate irrigation or drainage channels.
- Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers for any purpose. Dispose of them safely as per local guidelines.
PHI / REI & Storage
- PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval): 30 days — wait at least 30 days between the last spray and harvesting the crop.
