HPM Clodino Super is a selective, post-emergence systemic herbicide specially developed for wheat crops to control stubborn grassy weeds like Phalaris minor (also known as canary grass, Mandusi, or Gulli Danda) and wild oats (Avena fatua). It contains Clodinafop-propargyl 15% WP as its active ingredient and is formulated as a Wettable Powder (WP). This herbicide is designed for farmers dealing with heavy grass weed pressure in wheat fields, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic plains where Phalaris minor has become a major challenge.
Clodino Super works by being absorbed through the leaves of grass weeds. Once inside the weed, it moves systemically to the growing points and stops growth within 48 hours of application. The weed stops competing with the wheat crop for nutrients, water, and sunlight almost immediately. Visible symptoms like yellowing and drying appear within 1 to 3 weeks, leading to complete weed death. The product also contains a safener (Cloquintocet-mexyl) that helps the wheat crop safely break down the herbicide while the weeds cannot, ensuring crop safety.
One of the biggest advantages of Clodino Super is its rapid degradation in soil. It breaks down quickly and leaves little to no soil residue, meaning there are no cropping restrictions for the next season. Farmers can safely plant cotton, maize, vegetables, or any other crop after harvesting wheat. The product is rainfast within 2 hours of spraying, making it reliable even in unpredictable weather. It is classified under IRAC Group 1 (ACCase Inhibitor) and belongs to the Aryloxyphenoxypropionate (FOPs) chemical group. The toxicity label is Blue Triangle (Slightly Hazardous), and it comes in a 160 gm pack size, which is the recommended dose per acre.
Key Benefits
- Stops weed growth in 48 hours: The herbicide halts the active growth of grass weeds within two days of application, preventing them from stealing nutrients from the wheat crop.
- Safe for wheat crop: Contains a built-in safener (Cloquintocet-mexyl) that protects wheat while effectively killing grassy weeds, with no risk of crop damage at recommended doses.
- No soil residue for next crop: Degrades rapidly in the soil with no harmful residues, so you can plant any crop like cotton, maize, or vegetables immediately after wheat harvest without any restrictions.
- Rainfast in 2 hours: Gets absorbed quickly into weed leaves. If rain occurs 2 hours after spraying, re-spraying is not needed, saving time and money.
- Controls resistant weeds: Effectively controls Phalaris minor and wild oats, including biotypes that have developed resistance to older urea-based herbicides.
- Systemic action for complete kill: Moves from the leaves down to the roots and growing points, killing the weed from the inside out rather than just burning the leaves.
- Improves wheat yield: By removing grass weed competition during the critical growth stages, the wheat crop gets full access to nutrients, water, and sunlight, leading to better yields.
How It Works
HPM Clodino Super works by starving the weed of essential fats it needs to grow new cells. The active ingredient, Clodinafop-propargyl, is a fatty acid synthesis inhibitor. When sprayed on the weed, it is quickly absorbed through the waxy coating of the leaves within hours. From there, it travels systemically through the plant's vascular system to the active growing points, including the roots and shoot tips.
At the growing points, Clodinafop-propargyl blocks the ACCase enzyme (Acetyl CoA Carboxylase), which is essential for producing fatty acids that form cell membranes. Without new fatty acids, the weed cannot build new cells. The weed stops growing within 48 hours of application, even though visible symptoms take longer to appear. Older leaves may turn purple or orange, while young leaves turn yellow. The weed completely dries up and dies within 1 to 3 weeks.
The safener (Cloquintocet-mexyl) added to the formulation helps the wheat crop metabolize and break down the herbicide quickly and harmlessly. Wheat belongs to a different plant family that can process the chemical safely, while grass weeds cannot, making this a truly selective herbicide.

When to Use
The best time to apply HPM Clodino Super is 30 to 35 days after sowing (DAS) the wheat crop. This is usually after the first irrigation (known as Kor watering) when the soil is moist and at field capacity (vatar condition). At this stage, the grass weeds have emerged and are at the 2 to 4 leaf stage, which is when they are most vulnerable to the herbicide.
Spraying too early may miss weeds that have not yet germinated, while spraying too late (after the weeds have started tillering) reduces the effectiveness of the herbicide. The product works best under warm and moist conditions when weeds are actively growing. Avoid spraying if rainfall is expected within 2 hours, as the product needs at least 2 hours of dry weather after application to get fully absorbed into the weed leaves. Do not apply during extreme cold, drought stress, or when the crop is already under any other stress.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Check the timing: Ensure it is 30-35 days after sowing and weeds are at the 2-4 leaf stage. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged.
- Prepare the spray solution: Take the 160 gm pouch of Clodino Super. In a separate bucket, add some water and dissolve the powder to make a smooth slurry. This ensures no lumps form in the tank.
- Fill the spray tank: Fill the spray tank with about half the required water (75-80 litres). Add the slurry from the bucket and mix well. Then add the remaining water to make the total volume of 150-160 litres per acre.
- Choose the right nozzle: Use Flat Fan or Flood Jet nozzles for best coverage. These nozzles ensure the spray reaches the weed leaves properly.
- Spray evenly: Spray the solution uniformly across the field, ensuring all emerged grass weeds are covered. Do not over-spray or under-spray any area.
- Post-spray care: Avoid irrigation or rainfall for at least 2 hours after spraying. If possible, avoid irrigation for 24 hours for best herbicide uptake.
- Clean equipment: After spraying, thoroughly clean the spray tank, nozzles, and all equipment with clean water.
Compatibility
- Do NOT mix with 2,4-D: Mixing Clodino Super with 2,4-D (Sodium, Amine, or Ester formulations) significantly reduces its effectiveness due to antagonism. If both products are needed, maintain a gap of 5-7 days between sprays.
- Compatible with Sulfonylureas: Clodino Super can be tank-mixed with Metsulfuron-methyl for broad-spectrum weed control (grassy weeds + broadleaf weeds like Bathua). Always do a small jar test before large-scale mixing.
- Always use clean water for mixing. Avoid mixing with alkaline substances or other herbicides unless specifically recommended.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a face mask, and goggles while handling and spraying the herbicide.
- Avoid drift: Do not spray on windy days to prevent the herbicide from drifting to nearby non-target crops or fields.
- Hygiene: Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water after handling the product. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while spraying.
- Storage: Store the product in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and children. Keep in original container with lid tightly closed.
- Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers for storing food or water. Dispose of them safely according to local guidelines.
- Environmental safety: Avoid spray drift towards water bodies, ponds, or wells. Do not contaminate water sources during mixing or cleaning.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
- Clodino Super is selective to wheat and safe when used at the recommended dosage and growth stage. The safener (Cloquintocet-mexyl) protects the crop from any herbicide damage.
