HPM Dollar 4G is a granular insecticide containing Cartap Hydrochloride 4% GR, manufactured by HPM Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. This product is specially designed for the rice ecosystem, providing effective control of stem borers, leaf folders, and other chewing pests that damage paddy crops from the inside. The granular formulation makes it easy to apply in standing water conditions, which is common in paddy fields.

Dollar 4G works through systemic root absorption. When broadcast in standing water, the granules dissolve and the active ingredient is taken up by the plant roots. It then moves upward through the plant, making the entire plant toxic to pests that feed on it. This systemic action is particularly valuable for controlling pests like the Yellow Stem Borer that hide inside the stem where foliar sprays cannot reach.

The active ingredient, Cartap Hydrochloride, is a nereistoxin analogue that blocks nerve signals in insects. Once a pest ingests treated plant tissue, it stops feeding immediately due to paralysis of its mouthparts. This "stop-feeding" action saves the crop from further damage even before the pest dies. The product is effective against pests that have developed resistance to older chemicals like organophosphates and pyrethroids.

Key Benefits

  • Systemic root absorption - The granules dissolve in standing water and move up through roots, reaching hidden pests inside stems where sprays cannot go
  • Immediate stop-feeding action - Pests stop damaging the crop instantly after ingestion, preventing yield loss even before they die
  • Long-lasting residual protection - Offers sustained defense that outlasts typical foliar sprays, reducing the need for frequent reapplication
  • Ideal for wet paddy conditions - Specifically designed for standing water in rice fields; rain does not wash it off once absorbed by the plant
  • Controls resistant pests - Unique nereistoxin mode of action works effectively against pests resistant to organophosphates and pyrethroids
  • Easy broadcasting application - Granules can be mixed with sand or fertilizer for uniform distribution, no spraying equipment needed

How It Works

Dollar 4G contains Cartap Hydrochloride, which is a synthetic analogue of nereistoxin, a natural substance found in marine worms. The product works through a combination of stomach and systemic action.

When the granules are broadcast in standing water, the active ingredient dissolves and is absorbed by the rice plant roots. It then travels upward through the plant's vascular system (xylem), making the entire plant tissue toxic to feeding pests. This systemic movement is what makes Dollar 4G effective against stem borers and leaf folders that feed inside the plant where contact sprays cannot reach.

Once a pest larva ingests the treated plant tissue, the Cartap Hydrochloride blocks the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect's nervous system. This causes a synaptic blockade that leads to immediate paralysis. The insect loses the ability to control its mouthparts and stops feeding right away. Although the pest may remain alive for a short time, it cannot cause any further damage to the crop. The insect eventually dies from starvation and physiological collapse.

This mode of action is classified under IRAC Group 14 (Nereistoxin Analogues), which is different from most commonly used insecticides. This makes Dollar 4G an excellent option for managing pest populations that have developed resistance to organophosphates, carbamates, or pyrethroids.

When to Use

Timing: Apply Dollar 4G during the early vegetative stage of paddy, approximately 15-20 days after transplanting. This is the critical window when stem borers and leaf folders begin to attack the crop. You can also apply immediately upon noticing signs of pest activity such as "Dead Heart" (dried central shoot caused by stem borer) or folded leaves (caused by leaf folder).

Field Conditions: The field must have standing water of 5 to 7.5 cm depth at the time of application. Do not drain the water for at least 72 hours after application to allow the granules to dissolve and get fully absorbed by the plant roots. This product is specifically designed for wet paddy conditions and works best when water is maintained in the field.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Check water level: Ensure the paddy field has standing water of 5 to 7.5 cm depth before application.
  2. Mix with carrier: Mix the required quantity of Dollar 4G granules with dry sand or fertilizer (like Urea) in a ratio that allows even distribution. This helps in uniform broadcasting across the field.
  3. Broadcast evenly: Walk through the field and broadcast the mixture evenly by hand. Ensure complete coverage of the entire field area.
  4. Maintain water: Do not drain the field water for at least 72 hours after application. This is essential for proper dissolution and root absorption of the active ingredient.
  5. Wear PPE: Use gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and broadcasting the granules. Wash hands thoroughly after application.

Compatibility

Dollar 4G granules can be mixed with fertilizers like Urea for easier broadcasting. This allows farmers to provide nutrition and pest protection simultaneously. However, always perform a small compatibility test before large-scale mixing. Do not use this product in fields practicing rice-fish culture as Cartap Hydrochloride is toxic to fish and aquatic life.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protection: Always wear gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and applying the granules.
  • Hygiene: Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling the product.
  • Fish toxicity: Do not use Dollar 4G in paddy fields where fish farming (rice-fish culture) is practiced. Cartap Hydrochloride is highly toxic to fish and aquatic organisms.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers. Dispose of them safely according to local regulations.
  • Water management: Do not drain treated water into ponds, rivers, or water bodies used for aquaculture.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

Cartap Hydrochloride may cause phytotoxicity (plant damage) to sensitive crops such as cotton, tobacco, and apples. Avoid using this product on these crops unless specifically recommended by an agricultural expert. Always follow the recommended dosage to prevent crop injury.
