HPM Freedom Mix is a broad-spectrum, selective herbicide specially designed for weed control in rice (paddy) crops. It contains two powerful active ingredients — Metsulfuron Methyl 10% and Chlorimuron Ethyl 10% — in a Wettable Powder (WP) formulation. Both ingredients belong to the sulfonylurea chemical group and work together to stop weed growth by blocking essential amino acid production.

Freedom Mix effectively controls a wide range of sedges, broadleaf weeds, and aquatic weeds commonly found in paddy fields. Weeds like Cyperus (Motha), Eclipta alba, Ludwigia, Monochoria, and Marsilea are all effectively managed with this herbicide. It is absorbed through both the leaves and roots of weeds, making it a systemic solution that reaches deep into the plant. Rice crops naturally detoxify the chemical, so the crop stays safe while weeds are eliminated.

This herbicide is suitable for both transplanted and direct-seeded rice. It is applied as a post-emergence spray when weeds are young and actively growing. With proper use, Freedom Mix reduces the need for manual weeding, saves labour costs, and helps protect rice yields from weed competition. It is a practical, one-shot solution for rice farmers looking for reliable and long-lasting weed control.

Key Benefits

  • Dual-action formula with two active ingredients for broad-spectrum weed control in rice
  • Selective action — kills weeds without harming the rice crop
  • Systemic absorption through both leaves and roots for complete weed elimination
  • Effectively controls tough sedges (Motha), broadleaf weeds, and aquatic ferns
  • Long-lasting protection reduces the need for repeated sprays
  • Cuts down labour costs by reducing or replacing manual weeding
  • Helps protect rice yield by eliminating early weed competition for nutrients and sunlight
  • Easy to apply using standard knapsack or power sprayers

How It Works

HPM Freedom Mix works through the ALS (Acetolactate Synthase) inhibition pathway, which is also known as the Group 2 mode of action. When sprayed on weeds, the active ingredients — Metsulfuron Methyl and Chlorimuron Ethyl — are rapidly absorbed through the weed's foliage and root system. Once inside the plant, the chemicals travel through the vascular system to the growing points (meristems) of both shoots and roots.

At these growing points, the herbicide blocks the ALS enzyme, which is essential for producing three key amino acids — valine, leucine, and isoleucine. Without these amino acids, the weed's cells cannot divide and grow. This causes the weed to stop growing almost immediately after application. Visible symptoms like yellowing (chlorosis) and browning (necrosis) typically appear within 1 to 3 weeks, and the weed eventually dies completely.

Because Freedom Mix is systemic, it reaches underground parts of weeds like the tubers of Purple Nutsedge (Motha), preventing regrowth. Rice plants have a natural ability to metabolize and detoxify these active ingredients, which is why the crop remains unharmed while weeds are controlled.

When to Use

Apply HPM Freedom Mix as a post-emergence spray when weeds are actively growing but still young — typically at the 2 to 4 leaf stage. At this stage, weeds are most vulnerable to the herbicide, and control is most effective. Avoid spraying when weeds have become large or mature, as control may be reduced.

For best results in paddy fields, drain excess water from the field before spraying so that weed leaves are exposed. The soil should be moist but not flooded. After spraying, wait for 2 to 3 days before re-flooding the field. This allows the herbicide to be fully absorbed by the weeds. Apply the spray during calm weather conditions to avoid spray drift. Do not apply when rain is expected within a few hours, as it may wash off the chemical before it is absorbed.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare: Wear protective gloves, a mask, and goggles before handling the product.
  2. Measure: Take 8 gm of Freedom Mix (one pack) for one acre of paddy field.
  3. Mix: In a small container, make a slurry by mixing the powder with a little water. Stir well until no lumps remain.
  4. Add to tank: Pour the slurry into a sprayer tank filled with the recommended amount of water (120–150 litres per acre). Stir or agitate the tank thoroughly to ensure even mixing.
  5. Drain field: Before spraying, drain excess standing water from the paddy field. Leave the soil moist so weed leaves are visible.
  6. Spray: Apply the mixture evenly over the field using a knapsack or power sprayer. Ensure good coverage of all weed foliage.
  7. Re-flood: After 2 to 3 days, re-flood the field with water as per normal paddy management practices.
  8. Clean up: Wash the sprayer and all equipment thoroughly after use. Wash hands and clothes with soap and water.

Target Weeds

Sedges: Cyperus iria, Cyperus difformis, Cyperus rotundus (Purple Nutsedge / Motha), Fimbristylis miliacea

Broadleaf Weeds: Eclipta alba (False Daisy), Ludwigia parviflora (Water Primrose), Cynotis axillaris

Other Weeds: Monochoria vaginalis, Marsilea quadrifoliata (Water Clover)
