Overview
HPM Stump is a selective systemic herbicide containing Metribuzin 70% WP (Wettable Powder). It is designed to control a broad spectrum of grassy weeds and broad-leaved weeds in major field crops like Sugarcane, Soybean, Potato, Tomato, Maize, and Wheat. The herbicide works by being absorbed through the roots and leaves of weeds, then moving upward through the plant to stop the photosynthesis process. This causes weeds to turn yellow and die, while the target crops remain safe due to their natural ability to detoxify the chemical.
HPM Stump can be used both as a pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide, giving farmers flexibility in their weed management schedule. It is effective against tough weeds including Cyperus rotundus (Motha), Cynodon dactylon (Doob Grass), Chenopodium album (Bathua), Parthenium hysterophorus (Carrot Grass/Gajar Ghas), Phalaris minor (Gulli Danda), Convolvulus arvensis, and many others. The product belongs to the Triazinone chemical group and is classified under IRAC Group 5 (Photosystem II Inhibitor). It carries a Blue Triangle toxicity label, meaning it is moderately toxic and requires careful handling.
HPM Stump is manufactured by HPM Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd., a trusted Indian company with decades of experience in the agri-input sector. The product is available in pack sizes of 100 gm, 500 gm, and bulk packaging. With a waiting period of 60 days for Sugarcane, it provides long-lasting weed control that helps protect crop yield and quality.
Key Benefits
- Broad-spectrum weed control – Effectively controls both grassy weeds and broad-leaved weeds in a single application, reducing the need for multiple herbicides.
- Flexible application timing – Can be used as a pre-emergence spray (just after planting) or early post-emergence when weeds are small, giving farmers more options.
- Selective action – Kills weeds while keeping the crop safe. Target crops like Sugarcane, Soybean, and Wheat have natural enzymes that detoxify the herbicide.
- Systemic absorption – Absorbed through both roots and leaves, then moves upward through the plant to reach all parts of the weed for complete control.
- Long-lasting protection – Systemic action through root uptake prevents weeds from regrowing, providing extended control in the field.
- Moisture-activated – Works effectively when soil has 5-10% moisture, making it suitable for use in irrigated and rainfed conditions.
- Controls resistant weeds – Effective against problem weeds like Phalaris minor (Gulli Danda) in Wheat and Cyperus rotundus (Motha) in Sugarcane.
How It Works
HPM Stump contains Metribuzin, which belongs to the Triazinone chemical group and acts as a Photosystem II inhibitor (IRAC Group 5). When applied to the field, the herbicide is absorbed primarily through the roots of the weeds and partially through the leaves. Once inside the plant, it moves upward (acropetally) through the xylem tissue, reaching the stems and leaves where photosynthesis takes place.
At the molecular level, Metribuzin binds to specific sites in the chloroplasts of weed cells. This binding blocks the electron transport chain that is essential for photosynthesis. When electron transport is stopped, the weed can no longer produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Without energy, the weed's cell membranes begin to break down and burst. This causes the weed tissues to dry out rapidly.
The first visible sign of action is yellowing of the weed leaves, followed by complete wilting and death. The process is faster in young, actively growing weeds because they are more dependent on photosynthesis. Target crops like Sugarcane, Soybean, Potato, Tomato, Maize, and Wheat have natural enzyme systems that can break down Metribuzin into harmless compounds, which is why the herbicide is selective and safe for these crops.

When to Use
HPM Stump can be applied at two different stages depending on the weed pressure and crop requirements:
- Pre-emergence application: Apply immediately after planting or sowing, before weed seeds germinate. This is the most effective timing as it stops weeds before they emerge and compete with the crop.
- Early post-emergence application: Apply when weeds are small and actively growing (2-4 leaf stage). Weeds are most vulnerable at this stage, and control is more effective than waiting for larger weeds.
For best results, ensure the soil has adequate moisture (5-10%) at the time of application. Moisture helps activate the herbicide and allows it to be absorbed through weed roots. Avoid applying on completely dry soil. If the field is very dry, a light irrigation before application is recommended. Remove large soil clods from the field as they can shield weed seeds from the spray.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Prepare the spray solution: Since HPM Stump is a Wettable Powder (WP), first pre-mix the required quantity in a small bucket of water. Stir well to make a smooth paste or slurry.
- Add to main tank: Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Add the pre-mixed slurry to the tank while stirring continuously. Then add the remaining water and mix thoroughly.
- Check soil moisture: Ensure the field has adequate moisture (5-10%) before spraying. If the soil is dry, give a light irrigation before application.
- Apply uniformly: Spray the solution evenly across the field using a knapsack sprayer or power sprayer. Ensure complete coverage of the soil surface (for pre-emergence) or weed foliage (for post-emergence).
- Clean equipment: After spraying, thoroughly wash all spray equipment with clean water. Do not dispose of wash water near water bodies or wells.
- Post-application care: Do not disturb the soil for at least 7-10 days after pre-emergence application to maintain the herbicide layer.
