Overview
HPM Toofan is a broad-spectrum insecticide that combines two powerful active ingredients — Chlorpyriphos 16% and Alphacypermethrin 1% in an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) formulation. Manufactured by HPM Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd., this product is designed to provide fast knockdown and long-lasting control of a wide range of insect pests across multiple crops.
HPM Toofan works through contact, stomach, and fumigant action, making it effective against both chewing and sucking pests. It is especially trusted by farmers for controlling bollworm complex in cotton, stem borers and leaf folders in paddy, and various borers in vegetables. The dual-action formula attacks the insect nervous system through two different pathways, reducing the chance of resistance development and ensuring thorough pest control even in dense crop canopies.
This product carries a Yellow Triangle toxicity label (highly toxic) and must be used with proper safety precautions. It is restricted in the state of Kerala.
Key Benefits
- Dual-action control: Combines an organophosphate (Chlorpyriphos) and a synthetic pyrethroid (Alphacypermethrin) for superior efficacy against resistant pest populations.
- Fast knockdown effect: Alphacypermethrin quickly paralyzes pests on contact, stopping crop damage immediately.
- Long-lasting protection: Provides residual activity that reduces the need for frequent re-spraying, saving time and labor costs.
- Vapor/fumigant action: The formulation releases vapors that reach pests hiding inside curled leaves, cotton bolls, and soil cracks where sprays cannot directly reach.
- Broad-spectrum effectiveness: Controls both chewing pests (borers, caterpillars) and sucking pests (aphids, jassids, thrips, whiteflies).
- Versatile crop use: Effective on major field crops like cotton, paddy, soybean, maize, groundnut, pulses, and vegetables.
- Reduces pest resistance risk: Two different modes of action (IRAC Group 1B + Group 3A) make it harder for pests to develop resistance.
How It Works
HPM Toofan attacks the insect's nervous system through two distinct and complementary mechanisms, creating a powerful synergistic effect.
Chlorpyriphos (Organophosphate - IRAC Group 1B): This active ingredient acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for breaking down nerve signals in insects. When this enzyme is inhibited, nerve signals get "stuck" in an overstimulated state, causing uncontrolled tremors, paralysis, and eventually death. Chlorpyriphos works through contact, stomach (ingestion), and respiratory (fumigant vapor) action.
Alphacypermethrin (Synthetic Pyrethroid - IRAC Group 3A): This ingredient targets the sodium channels in the insect's nerve membranes. It keeps these channels open for too long, causing a rapid and uncontrolled burst of nerve impulses. This results in immediate paralysis — known as the "knockdown effect" — stopping the pest from feeding on your crop within minutes of contact. Alphacypermethrin works through contact and stomach action.
Together, these two ingredients attack the pest from different angles. The fumigant vapor action of the formulation also helps the product reach hidden pests inside cotton bolls, rolled leaves, and soil crevices — areas that ordinary sprays might miss. This combination makes HPM Toofan highly effective even against pest populations that have developed resistance to single-chemical insecticides.

Recommended Dosage & Application
| Crop | Dose per Acre | Water per Acre | Dose per Litre of Water | PHI (Days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | 1000 ml | 200–300 L | 3.5–5 ml | 15 days |
| Paddy (Rice) | 1000 ml | 200–300 L | 3.5–5 ml | 15 days |
| Vegetables | 800–1000 ml | 200 L | 4–5 ml | 7–10 days |
Note: For cotton, the dosage is also specified as 4 ml per litre of water for bollworm complex control. For a standard 15-litre knapsack sprayer, use approximately 50–75 ml of Toofan depending on pest severity.
General dilution: Mix 1–1.5 litres of Toofan with 300–400 litres of water per hectare.
When to Use
Apply HPM Toofan at the early signs of pest infestation for best results. Early intervention prevents pest populations from building up and causing significant crop damage. The product is most effective when pest activity is high — typically during the vegetative and reproductive stages of the crop when borers and caterpillars are actively feeding.
For bollworm complex in cotton, apply when egg laying or early larval stages are observed. For paddy pests like stem borers and leaf folders, apply at the first sign of damage symptoms such as dead hearts or leaf folding. For vegetable crops, apply when fruit borers or shoot borers are first noticed.
Best time of day for spraying: Apply during the evening hours. This product is toxic to honeybees, and evening application avoids peak pollination times when bees are actively foraging. Avoid spraying during high winds, rain, or extreme heat.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Check pest level: Inspect your crop to confirm pest presence and infestation severity before spraying.
- Prepare the spray solution: Fill the spray tank with half the required amount of clean water. Add the measured quantity of HPM Toofan. Stir or shake well. Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly.
- Use proper equipment: Use a knapsack sprayer, power sprayer, or mist blower with a fine mist nozzle. For bollworm control in cotton, a mist blower or battery sprayer with a high-volume nozzle helps the chemical penetrate the crop canopy.
- Apply evenly: Spray uniformly to ensure complete coverage of the crop, especially the undersides of leaves and growing points where pests hide.
- Post-application care: Do not enter the sprayed field until the spray has dried. Wash spray equipment thoroughly after use. Do not wash spray containers in ponds, rivers, or water bodies as the product is toxic to fish.
- Follow waiting period: Observe the pre-harvest interval (PHI) of 15 days for cotton and paddy, and 7–10 days for vegetables before harvesting.
Compatibility
HPM Toofan is generally compatible with most commonly used fungicides and micronutrients. However, always perform a jar test before mixing any new combination on a large scale — mix small quantities of the products in a glass jar, stir well, and check for any signs of precipitation, curdling, or separation. If the mixture remains uniform, it is safe to use. Rotate with insecticides from different chemical groups to avoid resistance buildup.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a mask, and goggles while handling and spraying. Wear full-body clothing and boots.
- During spraying: Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying the product.
- After spraying: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Change and wash contaminated clothing separately.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
- Environmental safety: This product is highly toxic to honeybees, fish, and aquatic organisms. Do not spray near water bodies, ponds, or during flowering when bees are active. Do not dispose of leftover spray or rinse water into water sources.
- Restricted use: This product is restricted in the state of Kerala.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
HPM Toofan carries a Yellow Triangle toxicity label, indicating it is highly toxic. It is toxic to honeybees — avoid spraying during flowering stages or apply only in the late evening when bees are not foraging. The product is also toxic to fish and aquatic organisms — do not allow spray drift or runoff to enter water bodies. Use strictly as per recommended dosage to avoid any risk of crop injury.
