HPM Vardan is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus insecticide containing Chlorpyriphos 20% EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate). Manufactured by HPM Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd., this insecticide is designed to control a wide range of chewing and sucking insect pests in agricultural crops as well as termites in buildings, woodwork, and furniture. It belongs to the IRAC Group 1B (Organophosphates) and works through contact, stomach, and fumigant (vapor) action, making it effective against pests that feed on foliage as well as those hiding in soil or crevices.
HPM Vardan is suitable for use on multiple crops including paddy (rice), cotton, sugarcane, wheat, groundnut, mustard, gram, brinjal, cabbage, onion, apple, citrus, tobacco, beans, barley, and ber. It targets a wide spectrum of pests such as stem borer, leaf roller, gall midge, hispa, whorl maggot in paddy; bollworm, aphid, whitefly, cutworm in cotton; black bug, early shoot & stalk borer, pyrilla in sugarcane; and termites in both cropped and non-cropped areas. The product can be applied as a foliar spray, soil treatment, seed treatment, or for pre- and post-construction termite control in buildings.
With a shelf life of up to 2 years under normal storage conditions, HPM Vardan offers reliable and long-lasting pest protection. Its emulsifiable concentrate formulation mixes easily with water for uniform spray coverage. Farmers and users should always follow label instructions for dosage, application method, and safety precautions to achieve effective results while ensuring personal and environmental safety.
Key Benefits
- Triple-action control: Works through contact, stomach, and vapor (fumigant) action to eliminate pests on contact, through ingestion, and even those hiding in soil or crevices.
- Broad-spectrum protection: Controls a wide range of sucking and chewing pests including stem borers, leaf rollers, bollworms, aphids, whiteflies, termites, and more across multiple crops.
- Effective termite management: Highly effective for pre-construction and post-construction anti-termite treatment in buildings, woodwork, and furniture, as well as soil termite control in crops.
- Multiple application methods: Can be used as foliar spray, soil drench, seed treatment, and structural treatment, giving farmers flexibility based on pest and crop needs.
- Long-lasting residual effect: Provides extended protection with a shelf life of up to 2 years under normal storage conditions, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
- Proven reliability: Manufactured by HPM Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd., a trusted name in Indian agriculture with decades of experience in agrochemical production.
How It Works
HPM Vardan contains Chlorpyriphos, which belongs to the organophosphorus group of insecticides. It acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor, disrupting the normal functioning of the insect's nervous system. When the enzyme acetylcholinesterase is inhibited, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine accumulates at nerve junctions, causing continuous nerve firing. This leads to paralysis, loss of coordination, and eventually death of the target pest.
The product works through three distinct modes of entry:
1. Contact action: Kills insects instantly upon direct exposure to the spray droplets.
2. Stomach action: Eliminates pests that ingest treated leaves, stems, or plant parts during feeding.
3. Fumigant (vapor) action: The chemical vapor released from the spray penetrates hidden crevices, soil pores, and plant canopy to reach concealed pests like termites, borers, and soil-dwelling insects.
This triple-action mechanism makes Vardan effective against both foliage-feeding pests and those that hide in soil, plant stems, or structural wood. The product is non-systemic, meaning it does not move within the plant's vascular system, so thorough spray coverage is essential for best results.

When to Use
Apply HPM Vardan immediately when pest population crosses the Economic Threshold Level (ETL). Early intervention is key to preventing pest outbreaks and minimizing crop damage. For foliar application, apply during the early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are lower and beneficial insect activity is minimal. Avoid application during heavy rainfall or strong winds to prevent spray drift and wash-off.
For paddy crops, apply at the first sign of stem borer, leaf roller, gall midge, or hispa infestation. For cotton, monitor for bollworm, aphid, whitefly, and cutworm populations and spray when pest pressure reaches damaging levels. For termite control in buildings, apply during the construction phase (pre-construction treatment) or at the first sign of termite activity (post-construction treatment). For seed treatment, treat seeds just before sowing to protect germinating seedlings from soil-borne pests and termites.
Ensure thorough coverage of the underside of leaves, especially for cotton and paddy pests that often hide in protected plant parts. The product is most effective when applied at the early stages of pest infestation before pest populations become severe.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Read the label: Always read and follow the instructions on the official product label before use.
- Prepare the spray solution: Premix the required quantity of Vardan with a small amount of water in a separate container. Stir well to create a uniform mixture.
- Fill the spray tank: Add the premixed solution to the main spray tank filled with the recommended amount of water. Keep the agitator running or stir continuously to maintain uniform suspension.
- Calibrate your sprayer: Ensure your sprayer is properly calibrated to deliver the correct volume per acre as per the dosage table.
- Apply evenly: Spray uniformly over the crop canopy, ensuring thorough coverage of both upper and lower leaf surfaces. Pay special attention to the underside of leaves where pests often hide.
- For soil treatment: Apply the diluted solution directly to the soil around the plant base or as a drench for root zone pest control.
- For seed treatment: Mix the required quantity of Vardan with seeds in a container, ensuring all seeds are evenly coated. Dry in shade before sowing.
- Clean equipment: After application, thoroughly clean all spray equipment with water. Do not dispose of rinse water near water bodies or drainage systems.
