IIL Centran is a broad-spectrum insecticide from Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL), available in two powerful formulations designed to protect rice and sugarcane crops from major insect pests. Centran combines two proven active ingredients — Fipronil and Chlorantraniliprole — in a dual-action formula that provides both contact and systemic protection.
Centran comes in two formulations to suit different farming needs. The Centran SC (Suspension Concentrate) contains Fipronil 15% + Chlorantraniliprole 5% SC and is used as a foliar spray for controlling above-ground pests like stem borer, leaf folder, brown plant hopper (BPH), gall midge, and thrips in rice. The Centran GR (Granule) contains Chlorantraniliprole 0.35% + Fipronil 0.35% GR and is broadcast in the soil for systemic control of stem borers, termites, and root weevils, especially during the critical tillering stage of paddy.
Launched in January 2025, Centran is designed not only to control pests but also to support crop health. Farmers report visibly greener crops, stronger root systems, and better tiller growth after using Centran. The dual mode of action helps manage pest resistance, making it a reliable choice for modern Indian rice farming. With both spray and granular options, Centran gives farmers flexibility based on their field conditions and pest pressure.
Key Benefits
- Dual-action pest control: Combines contact and systemic action to kill pests on contact and from inside the plant, providing complete protection.
- Controls major rice pests: Effectively targets stem borer, leaf folder, brown plant hopper (BPH), gall midge, thrips, and soil pests like termites and root weevils.
- Long-lasting protection: One application provides extended residual activity, reducing the need for repeat sprays and saving labour and input costs.
- Stops damage instantly: Chlorantraniliprole causes immediate muscle paralysis in caterpillars — they stop feeding within minutes, preventing "dead heart" damage in rice.
- Promotes healthier crops: Supports robust root development, stronger stems, and vigorous tiller growth, leading to better grain quality and higher yields.
- Resistance management: Two different modes of action (Group 28 Diamide + Group 2B Phenylpyrazole) help control pests that have developed resistance to single-ingredient products.
- Labour-saving granular option: Centran GR can be mixed with sand, urea, or fertilizer and broadcast manually — no sprayer or water tanker needed.
- Flexible application: Available as both foliar spray (SC) and soil broadcast (GR) to match different pest situations and farming practices.
How It Works
Centran uses a powerful two-pronged attack to eliminate pests. The two active ingredients work in different ways, ensuring no pest survives and reducing the chance of resistance development.
Chlorantraniliprole belongs to the Diamide chemical group (IRAC Group 28). It targets the ryanodine receptors in the insect's muscle cells. This causes an uncontrolled release of calcium, making the insect's muscles lock up permanently. The pest becomes paralyzed within minutes, stops feeding immediately, and eventually dies. This is why farmers see "dead heart" damage stop soon after application.
Fipronil belongs to the Phenylpyrazole chemical group (IRAC Group 2B). It blocks GABA-gated chloride channels in the insect's central nervous system. This causes hyperexcitation of the nerves, leading to rapid death of the insect. Fipronil is especially effective against soil-dwelling pests like termites and root weevils.
In the SC (spray) formulation, both ingredients work on contact and are absorbed by the plant foliage for systemic protection. In the GR (granule) formulation, the granules are broadcast in the field. When the soil has standing water, the granules dissolve and are absorbed by the roots. The medicine then travels upward through the stem, creating a protective shield inside the plant. This systemic movement kills borers and leaf feeders that are hidden deep inside the stem where sprays cannot reach.

Recommended Dosage & Application
Centran SC (Foliar Spray):
- Dosage: 200 ml per acre
- Water volume: 200 to 300 litres per acre
- Method: Foliar spray using a flat fan nozzle for uniform coverage
- Timing: Apply at early pest infestation stage
Centran GR (Soil Broadcast):
| Crop | Dose per Acre | Water / Field Condition | Application Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paddy (Rice) | 4 kg | Maintain 2-3 inches standing water for 3-5 days after application | Broadcast (mix with sand, urea, or fertilizer) |
| Sugarcane | 7.5 - 10 kg | Soil drench / wet soil | Soil application |
When to Use
For Centran GR in Rice: Apply between 15 to 30 days after transplanting (DAT). This is the critical tillering stage when stem borers cause "dead heart" damage. Applying at this time protects the young tillers and ensures healthy crop establishment. Maintain 2-3 inches of standing water in the field for 3 to 5 days after application to help the granules dissolve and the roots absorb the medicine.
For Centran SC in Rice: Apply as a foliar spray at the early appearance of pests. Monitor the field regularly and spray when pest populations first appear — before they reach damaging levels. Early application gives the best results as the dual-action formula stops pests quickly.
General guidance: Use Centran when you notice stem borer moths, leaf folder larvae, or hopper nymphs in the field. For soil pests like termites, apply Centran GR at the time of transplanting or early crop establishment.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
For Centran SC (Foliar Spray):
- Fill the spray tank with clean water up to half the required volume.
- Measure 200 ml of Centran SC per acre.
- Add the measured insecticide to the tank and mix thoroughly.
- Add remaining water to make the total volume 200-300 litres per acre.
- Stir the mixture well before and during spraying.
- Use a flat fan nozzle for even and uniform coverage of the crop.
- Spray when pest infestation is first noticed, preferably in the morning or evening when temperatures are lower.
- Ensure complete coverage of the plant canopy, especially the stem and leaf surfaces.
For Centran GR (Soil Broadcast):
- Measure 4 kg of Centran GR per acre for paddy (or 7.5-10 kg for sugarcane).
- Mix the granules with an equal amount of sand, urea, or basal fertilizer for even distribution.
- Broadcast the mixture uniformly across the field by hand.
- Ensure the field has 2-3 inches of standing water at the time of application.
- Do not drain the water from the field for at least 3-5 days after application.
- Apply between 15 to 30 days after transplanting for best results.
- Wear gloves and protective gear while handling and broadcasting the granules.
Compatibility
Centran GR granules can be mixed with sand, urea, or other basal fertilizers for easier and more uniform broadcasting. Always mix immediately before application. For Centran SC, follow standard mixing practices. If tank-mixing with other products is needed, conduct a small jar test first to check for physical compatibility. Do not mix with alkaline substances.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and applying Centran. Wear full-sleeve clothing and boots during spraying or broadcasting.
- During application: Avoid inhalation of spray mist or dust. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product.
- After application: Wash hands, face, and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing separately.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Environmental safety: Centran is toxic to fish and aquatic life. Do not drain treated field water directly into fish ponds, rivers, or water bodies. Do not use in rice-fish farming systems.
- Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers. Dispose of them safely as per local regulations. Do not burn or bury near water sources.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
Centran contains Fipronil, which is highly toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. It is strictly recommended NOT to use this product in rice-fish integrated farming systems. Avoid spray drift to nearby water bodies, non-target crops, and flowering plants visited by pollinators. Follow recommended doses to avoid any crop stress.
