IIL Hercules is a broad-spectrum combination insecticide from Insecticides India Limited, formulated as a Wettable Powder (WP) containing two powerful active ingredients: Diafenthiuron 40.1% and Acetamiprid 3.9%. This unique dual-action product is designed to provide effective control of a wide range of sucking pests including whiteflies, aphids, jassids, thrips, and mites in crops like cotton, chilli, and all vegetables.

What makes Hercules stand out is its combination of vapour action and systemic action. The Diafenthiuron component releases a gas upon contact with sunlight that reaches hidden pests on the underside of leaves, while Acetamiprid moves systemically inside the plant to provide long-lasting protection. Additionally, Hercules reduces the egg-laying capacity of whiteflies and provides a noticeable phytotonic effect that enhances the natural green sheen and overall health of the crop. It can be applied at any stage of crop growth, making it a flexible and reliable choice for farmers dealing with complex sucking pest infestations.

Key Benefits

  • Dual-action control – Combines vapour action (Diafenthiuron) and systemic action (Acetamiprid) to kill pests from outside and inside the plant
  • Controls hidden pests – Vapour action reaches pests hiding under leaves and in crevices where normal sprays cannot reach
  • Reduces whitefly egg-laying – Suppresses the egg-laying capacity of female whiteflies, breaking the pest life cycle
  • Long-lasting protection – Provides residual effect lasting 14 to 21 days, reducing the need for frequent sprays
  • Phytotonic effect – Enhances natural leaf sheen and crop vigour, giving crops a healthy green appearance
  • Flexible application timing – Can be used at any stage of crop growth, from early to late stages
  • Sunlight-activated – Bright sunlight helps activate the Diafenthiuron vapour for maximum efficacy
  • Cost-effective – Controls multiple pest types (whiteflies, thrips, mites, jassids, aphids) in one spray, reducing the need for separate products

How It Works

IIL Hercules uses a powerful dual-strategy "Hammer and Anvil" approach to control sucking pests that have developed resistance to ordinary insecticides.

The Hammer (Vapour Action – Diafenthiuron): When Hercules is sprayed on the crop and exposed to sunlight, the Diafenthiuron component transforms into a gas. This vapour penetrates deep into leaf crevices, flower buds, and the underside of leaves where pests like whiteflies, thrips, and mites typically hide. The gas acts as a mitochondrial inhibitor (IRAC Group 12A), shutting down the pest's cellular respiration system, effectively suffocating them.

The Anvil (Systemic Action – Acetamiprid): Acetamiprid is absorbed by the plant leaves and moves upward through the plant's vascular system (xylem). It acts as a neurotoxin (IRAC Group 4A – Neonicotinoid) that overstimulates the insect's nervous system, causing continuous nerve firing, paralysis, and eventual death. This systemic movement ensures that even pests feeding on untreated parts of the plant are exposed to the chemical.

Life Cycle Disruption: Beyond killing adult pests, Hercules also has ovicidal properties that prevent eggs from hatching. The residue on leaves continues to protect the crop for weeks, breaking the pest's reproductive cycle and preventing the next generation from establishing.

Note: In case of heavy infestation (e.g., more than 10 whiteflies per leaf), use Hercules at 300 g per acre for effective control.

When to Use

Hercules can be applied at any stage of crop growth, making it a flexible option for farmers. For best results, follow these timing guidelines:

  • Time of day: Spray in the early morning. As the day warms up, sunlight activates the Diafenthiuron vapour for maximum efficacy.
  • Pest stage: Apply at the first sign of pest infestation for best control. Early intervention prevents pest populations from building up.
  • Infestation level: For light to moderate infestation, use 250 g/acre. For heavy infestation (visible pest colonies, leaf curling, honeydew), increase to 300 g/acre.
  • Crop stage: Suitable for use at any stage – from vegetative growth to flowering and fruiting stages.
  • Weather conditions: Avoid spraying when rain is expected within 4-6 hours. The product becomes rainfast after 4-6 hours of application. Do not spray during peak bee activity or when crops are in full bloom during daytime.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Calculate the dose: Measure the correct quantity of Hercules based on your crop and infestation level. For most situations, use 250 g per acre in 150-200 litres of water.
  2. Prepare a slurry: Since Hercules is a Wettable Powder (WP), first mix the measured dose in a small bucket of water (about 2-3 litres) to make a smooth slurry. Stir well until no lumps remain.
  3. Fill the spray tank: Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Pour the prepared slurry into the tank while stirring or agitating continuously.
  4. Top up and agitate: Add the remaining water to reach the required volume. Keep the agitation running to ensure the product stays properly mixed in the water.
  5. Spray application: Apply the spray evenly on the crop, ensuring thorough coverage. Pay special attention to the underside of leaves where whiteflies, thrips, and mites typically hide. Use high water volume (minimum 150 litres per acre) for complete coverage.
  6. Clean equipment: After spraying, thoroughly clean all spray equipment with clean water. Do not dispose of leftover spray solution or rinse water near water bodies.
  7. Post-application care: Do not enter the sprayed field until the spray has dried completely. Follow the recommended Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) of 15-20 days before harvesting.

Compatibility

Hercules is generally compatible with commonly used fungicides such as Carbendazim, Mancozeb, and Copper Oxychloride. However, it should not be mixed with highly alkaline products like Lime Sulfur or Bordeaux mixture. Always perform a small jar test before mixing with any new product to check for physical compatibility. Do not mix with any product unless compatibility is confirmed.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a face mask, and goggles while handling and spraying Hercules. Wear full-sleeved clothing and boots during application.
  • During spraying: Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or spraying the product. Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Spray in the direction of the wind to avoid drift onto yourself.
  • After spraying: Wash hands, face, and all exposed body parts thoroughly with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing separately before reuse.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep away from food, feed, and drinking water. Store out of reach of children and animals.
  • Environmental safety: This product is toxic to aquatic life and bees. Do not spray near fish ponds, water bodies, or during peak bee activity. Avoid spray drift to neighbouring crops.
  • Disposal: Do not reuse empty containers. Dispose of them safely by crushing or burying away from water sources.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

When used at the recommended dosage with sufficient water volume (minimum 150 litres per acre), Hercules is safe for the target crops. Using low water volume can concentrate the chemical too much, which may cause leaf burn (phytotoxicity). Always follow the recommended dose per acre and do not cut corners on water volume. The product is toxic to bees and aquatic organisms, so avoid spraying during flowering periods when bees are active and near water bodies.

PHI / REI & Storage

  • Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI): 15 days for vegetables; 15-20 days for cotton and chilli
  • Rainfastness: 4-6 hours after application
  • Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture when stored under proper conditions
  • Storage conditions: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.
