IIL Lethal is a broad-spectrum insecticide from Insecticides India Limited (IIL), formulated with Chlorpyriphos 20% EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate). It belongs to the organophosphate chemical group and works through contact, stomach, and fumigant (vapour) action to control a wide range of sucking, chewing, and soil-dwelling pests across many field, vegetable, and horticultural crops.
This insecticide is trusted by Indian farmers for managing pests like stem borer, leaf roller, gall midge, hispa, aphids, bollworms, whitefly, cutworms, root grubs, and pod borers in crops such as paddy, cotton, sugarcane, groundnut, mustard, brinjal, beans, gram, wheat, barley, cabbage, and onion. It also acts as an effective termite barrier in soil and is used for pre-construction anti-termite treatment. With multiple application methods—foliar spray, soil drench, seedling dip, and seed treatment—Lethal gives farmers flexible and dependable pest control.
Lethal 20% EC provides long-lasting protection with minimal crop damage, is compatible with most common insecticides and fungicides, and supports healthier, higher-yielding crops when applied at the recommended dose. It is non-phytotoxic at recommended rates and persists in soil for 2–4 months, making it especially useful against soil pests and termites.
Key Benefits
- Broad-spectrum control of sucking, chewing, and soil pests in one product, reducing the need for multiple sprays.
- Triple action (contact, stomach, and fumigant) reaches hidden pests in stems, roots, and soil that direct spray may miss.
- Long-lasting residual protection of about 15–25 days, with soil persistence of 2–4 months for termite and soil pest control.
- Versatile application—can be used as foliar spray, soil drench, seedling dip, and seed treatment.
- Helps prevent pest-related yield loss and supports healthier, pest-free crops for better productivity.
- Compatible with most common fungicides and water-soluble fertilizers, making tank-mixing easier.
- Non-phytotoxic when applied at the recommended dose, so it is safe on crops when used correctly.
How It Works
Lethal 20% EC works as an organophosphate insecticide by inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase enzyme in the insect's nervous system. This enzyme is responsible for calming nerve signals after they fire. When it is blocked, the insect's nerves keep firing uncontrollably, leading to overstimulation, paralysis, and finally death.
The product acts through three pathways. First, through contact action—when a pest touches the treated plant or soil surface, the chemical enters its body. Second, through stomach action—when a chewing pest feeds on treated plant parts, it ingests the poison. Third, through fumigant (vapour) action—the chemical releases a vapour that penetrates hidden tunnels in stems, roots, and termite mounds, reaching pests that direct spray could not cover.
For termites, Lethal creates a repellent barrier in the soil. Termites detect the chemical wall and avoid crossing it; if they try to cross, they die. This makes it effective both for crop protection and for pre-construction anti-termite treatment in buildings.

Recommended Dosage & Application
Dosage varies by crop and target pest. Always follow the crop-wise dose per acre and pre-harvest interval (PHI) given below. Use 150–200 litres of water per acre for full canopy coverage.
| Crop | Target Pests | Dose per Acre | Dose per 15L Pump | PHI (Days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paddy | Hispa, Leaf Roller, Gall Midge, Stem Borer | 500–750 ml | 37–56 ml | 30 |
| Beans | Aphid, Pod Borer | 1200 ml | 90 ml | 14 |
| Gram | Cutworm | 1000 ml | 75 ml | 14 |

| Cotton | Aphid, Bollworm, Whitefly, Cutworm | 500–1500 ml | 37–112 ml | 21 |
| Groundnut | Aphid, Root Grub | 400–460 ml | 30–34 ml | 30 |
| Mustard | Aphid | 200 ml | 15 ml | 14 |
| Brinjal | Shoot and Fruit Borer | 400 ml | 30 ml | 7 |
For general foliar spray, a dose of 350–400 ml per acre (35–40 ml per 15-litre pump) is commonly used. For termite control in construction, mix 1 litre of Lethal with 19 litres of water (1:19 ratio) and apply 5–7.5 litres of this mix per square metre of soil surface.
When to Use
Apply Lethal 20% EC at the first signs of pest activity—when small caterpillars start feeding, when sucking pests colonise new shoots, or when soil pests like root grubs and cutworms begin damaging the crop base. Early application gives the best results and prevents pest populations from building up.
For paddy, apply during the nursery or early tillering stages. For cotton, spray from the pre-boll to boll stage. For sugarcane, apply from tillering to maturity. Spray during cool morning or late afternoon/early evening hours, as leaf temperature is lower and product retention on the leaf is stronger. Avoid spraying during flowering to protect bees, and avoid strong wind and hot afternoons.
Repeat application at 10–15 day intervals, with 2–3 sprays per crop cycle depending on pest pressure and crop stage.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Shake the Lethal bottle well before opening to mix the active ingredient evenly.
- Wear protective gloves, a face mask, and protective eyewear before handling the product.
- Measure the correct quantity using a marked cup or syringe.
- Half-fill the spray tank with clean water and pour the measured product in slowly.
- Add the remaining water and stir until the solution looks uniform.
- Use a fine-mist or hollow-cone nozzle for proper coverage.
- Spray during calm weather, covering both upper and lower leaf surfaces.
- Use 150–200 litres of water per acre for full canopy coverage.
- Wash hands and exposed body parts with soap and water after use.
Compatibility
Lethal 20% EC is compatible with most common fungicides and water-soluble fertilizers, and with most other insecticides and fungicides. It works well with synthetic pyrethroids like cypermethrin and deltamethrin in integrated pest management programs.
Avoid mixing with strongly alkaline products such as Bordeaux mixture, lime sulfur, or high-pH copper sprays. Always run a small jar test before trying a new tank-mix combination to confirm compatibility.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear hand gloves, a face mask, and protective eyewear while handling and spraying the product.
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke during mixing or spraying.
- Spray downwind and keep children, pets, and livestock away from treated fields.
- Wash hands and exposed body parts with soap and water after use.
- Do not inhale the spray mist; avoid contact with skin or eyes.
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight, food, animal feed, and drinking water sources.
- Keep out of reach of children, pets, and livestock. Store in the original container with the cap tightly closed.
- Destroy empty containers safely after use.
- In case of accidental ingestion, contact a doctor immediately with the product label. If poisoned, induce vomiting only if the person is conscious; perform gastric lavage if needed. Antidote: administer Atropine 2–4 mg IV and seek medical help immediately.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
Lethal 20% EC is non-phytotoxic when applied at the recommended dose. It is highly toxic to fish and bees, so do not spray near water bodies or during active bee foraging. It is banned for use on certain crops like Ber and Citrus due to high residues; always use only on crops listed on the product label.
