IIL Milthion is a broad-spectrum insecticide and acaricide manufactured by Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL). It contains Malathion 50% EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate), which belongs to the organophosphate chemical group. Milthion works through contact, stomach, and fumigant action, making it effective against a wide range of sucking pests, chewing pests, and mites in both agricultural and public health settings.

As a non-systemic organophosphate, Malathion disrupts the nervous system of insects by inhibiting the cholinesterase enzyme, leading to paralysis and rapid death. Milthion is widely trusted by Indian farmers for managing pests in crops like paddy, cotton, soybean, vegetables, and fruits. It is also a standard product used in mosquito control programs, household pest management, animal houses, mushroom cultivation, and stored grain protection. Its dual utility across farming and public health makes it a versatile and cost-effective choice for pest management.

Milthion carries a Blue Triangle toxicity label (moderately toxic) and is classified under IRAC MoA Group 1B. It is approved by regulatory bodies and supported by ICAR guidelines for safe and effective use.

Key Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum control – Effective against over 20 types of pests including aphids, jassids, thrips, whiteflies, caterpillars, borers, leafhoppers, mites, mosquitoes, and flies
  • Quick knockdown action – Works through contact and stomach poisoning to rapidly paralyze and kill pests, stopping crop damage immediately
  • Dual-action protection – Acts as both an insecticide and acaricide, controlling insects and spider mites in one application
  • Cost-effective solution – One of the most affordable broad-spectrum insecticides available, making it ideal for managing pest outbreaks on a budget
  • Multi-use versatility – Suitable for field crops, vegetables, fruits, stored grains, animal houses, mosquito fogging, and household pest control
  • Short pre-harvest interval – Low PHI (3-7 days for vegetables) allows safe use close to harvest, especially on crops like okra and brinjal
  • Trusted in public health – Widely used in National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme for mosquito and housefly control through thermal fogging

How It Works

Milthion (Malathion 50% EC) works by attacking the nervous system of insects. It is a non-systemic poison, meaning it does not get absorbed into the plant tissues. Instead, it relies on direct contact with the pest or ingestion when the pest feeds on treated plant surfaces.

When applied, the chemical enters the insect's body through the cuticle (skin) upon contact or through the digestive tract when the pest eats treated leaves. Inside the insect's body, Malathion converts into a more active compound called Malaoxon. This compound blocks the enzyme Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which is essential for proper nerve signal transmission. Without this enzyme, nerve signals fire uncontrollably, causing tremors, paralysis, and eventually death of the pest.

Milthion also has fumigant action, meaning its vapours can reach pests hiding in cracks, crevices, or stored grain piles. This three-way action (contact + stomach + fumigant) ensures comprehensive pest control. Importantly, Malathion is safer for mammals (humans and livestock) because our bodies can break it down rapidly, unlike insects. However, it is toxic to honeybees and beneficial insects, so care must be taken during application.

Recommended Dosage & Application

The dosage of Milthion depends on the crop, target pest, and severity of infestation. Always follow the dose per acre for accurate results.

Note: PHI = Pre-Harvest Interval, the minimum number of days between last spray and harvest. For crops not listed, follow the dose range of 250-600 ml per acre as a general guideline.

When to Use

Apply Milthion at the first sign of pest infestation or as a preventive measure when pest pressure is expected. For best results, spray during the early morning or late evening hours. This timing helps protect honeybees and other beneficial insects that are active during the day, and also prevents the chemical from evaporating too quickly in strong sunlight.

For paddy, apply during the tillering stage when rice hispa or leaf folder activity is noticed. For soybean, apply from flowering to pod stage to control pod borers and aphids. For cotton, apply during vegetative to flowering stage against whitefly, jassid, and thrips. For vegetables, spray at early pest appearance before infestation becomes severe. For fruit trees, apply before fruit setting to control beetles and thrips.

Avoid spraying during strong sunlight, rain, or windy conditions. Do not spray during full bloom when bees are actively foraging, as Malathion is toxic to honeybees.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare protective gear – Wear gloves, a mask, goggles, and full-sleeve clothing before handling the product.
  2. Measure the correct dose – Check the recommended dosage for your crop and pest. Measure the required amount of Milthion using a clean measuring cup.
  3. Mix with water – Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Add the measured Milthion and stir well. Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly until a white emulsion forms.
  4. For thermal fogging – Mix 1 part Milthion with 19 parts Diesel. Do not add water for fogging applications.
  5. Apply evenly – Use a knapsack sprayer or power sprayer with a flat-fan nozzle. Ensure thorough coverage of both upper and lower leaf surfaces, as this is a contact poison.
  6. Clean up – After spraying, wash the sprayer thoroughly. Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin with soap and water.
  7. Observe waiting period – Respect the pre-harvest interval (PHI) before harvesting treated crops.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal protection – Always wear gloves, mask, goggles, and full-sleeve clothing during mixing and application
  • Avoid contact – Do not allow the chemical to come in contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. In case of contact, wash immediately with plenty of water
  • Do not inhale – Avoid breathing spray mist or fog. Use a mask or respirator, especially during fogging operations
  • Storage – Store in original container in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and water sources. Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Environmental safety – Do not contaminate ponds, rivers, or water bodies. Avoid spray drift to non-target crops and areas
  • Bee toxicity – Milthion is toxic to honeybees. Do not spray during flowering period or when bees are actively foraging
  • First aid – In case of accidental poisoning, consult a doctor immediately. Atropine sulfate is the specific antidote and should be administered by a medical professional
  • Disposal – Do not reuse empty containers. Dispose of them safely as per local regulations

Compatibility

Milthion (Malathion 50% EC) is generally compatible with most commonly used insecticides and fungicides. However, it should not be mixed with alkaline substances or products with high pH, as this can reduce its effectiveness. For thermal fogging applications, mix only with diesel in a 1:19 ratio (1 part Milthion to 19 parts Diesel). Always perform a small jar test before mixing with any new product to check for physical compatibility. Do not mix with oils or other products unless specifically recommended on the label.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

  • Toxic to honeybees – Milthion is highly toxic to bees and other beneficial pollinators. Avoid application during bloom or when bees are foraging
  • Fish toxicity – Malathion is toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Avoid spray drift or runoff into water bodies
  • Crop sensitivity – Some varieties of certain crops may be sensitive. Always test on a small area before large-scale application if unsure
  • Heat stress – Avoid spraying during extreme heat or direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn or reduced efficacy
