Selector works by being absorbed through both the leaves and roots of weeds, then moving throughout the plant to stop growth at the source. This systemic action ensures complete weed control from root to shoot. The herbicide belongs to the imidazolinone chemical group and acts as an ALS enzyme inhibitor, disrupting the production of essential amino acids that weeds need to grow and survive.

How It Works

IIL Selector contains Imazethapyr 10% SL, which belongs to the imidazolinone chemical group and works as an ALS (acetolactate synthase) enzyme inhibitor. When sprayed on weeds, the herbicide is rapidly absorbed through both the foliage (leaves) and roots. Once inside the weed, it moves systemically through the plant's vascular system via xylem and phloem, accumulating in the growing points and meristematic tissues where new cells are formed.

At these active growth sites, Imazethapyr blocks the ALS enzyme, which is essential for the production of three branched-chain amino acids: valine, leucine, and isoleucine. Without these amino acids, the weed cannot produce the proteins needed for cell division and growth. The weed stops growing almost immediately after application. Within a few days, visible symptoms appear — the weed turns yellow, growth halts, and complete death occurs within 10 to 14 days.

Legume crops like soybean and groundnut are naturally tolerant to Imazethapyr because they can metabolize (break down) the chemical much faster than weeds can. This selective action ensures the crop remains safe while target weeds are effectively controlled. The residual activity in the soil continues to control germinating weeds for several weeks after application, providing extended protection during the critical crop growth period.

When to Use

IIL Selector is a post-emergence herbicide and should be applied when weeds are at the early growth stage — specifically the 2 to 4 leaf stage. At this stage, weeds are young, actively growing, and most susceptible to the herbicide's action. For soybean, this typically falls between 15 to 25 days after sowing (DAS). For groundnut, application is recommended around 20 to 30 days after planting. For pulses like green gram and black gram, apply at 15 to 20 days after emergence when weeds are at the 2-3 leaf stage.

Apply during cool morning or evening hours for best results. Ensure the soil has adequate moisture at the time of application — do not spray on dry, cracked soil or on moisture-stressed weeds, as this reduces effectiveness. If the soil is dry, a light irrigation before spraying is recommended. Avoid spraying if heavy rainfall is expected within 6 to 8 hours.

Late application (after weeds have passed the 4-leaf stage or are larger) will significantly reduce weed control. Timely application during the critical weed competition period (first 15-45 days after sowing) is key to protecting crop yield.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

1. Prepare: Wear protective gear — gloves, goggles, and a face mask before handling the herbicide.
2. Mix: Fill the spray tank halfway with clean water. Add the measured dose of IIL Selector (as per the dosage table above) and stir or agitate thoroughly. Fill the rest of the tank with water and mix again.
3. Nozzle selection: Use a flat fan or flood jet nozzle for uniform spray coverage. Ensure continuous agitation in the tank during spraying to keep the solution well-mixed.
4. Spray: Apply as a uniform foliar spray, ensuring thorough coverage of all target weeds. Do not over-spray or allow runoff.
5. Post-application: Avoid irrigation or rainfall for at least 6 hours after spraying. If rain occurs after 6 hours, efficacy is maintained.
6. Clean up: Wash the sprayer and all equipment thoroughly with clean water after use. Wash hands and exposed skin with soap and water.

Compatibility

IIL Selector is generally compatible with selective herbicides, but it is not recommended to mix with insecticides or other pesticides unless specifically advised, as this may reduce weed control efficacy or cause nozzle clogging. If tank mixing is considered, always perform a jar compatibility test first by mixing small quantities of the products in water to check for any adverse reaction (clotting, separation, heating). Use clean water for mixing.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

• Temporary yellowing (Yellow Flash): A slight temporary yellowing or stunting of the crop may be observed after spraying. This is normal and cosmetic — the crop will recover fully within 10 to 14 days without any yield loss.
• Crop rotation caution: Selector has residual soil activity. Sensitive crops like mustard, vegetables, or other non-legume crops should NOT be planted immediately after harvest. Wheat and chickpea (gram) are safer rotational choices.
• Avoid overdose: Using higher than recommended doses, especially on short-duration pulses like moong or urad, may cause stunting. Always use the recommended dose per acre.
• Motha suppression: Selector suppresses Cyperus rotundus (Motha) growth for 30-40 days but may not kill underground tubers completely.
