IIL Sofia is a broad-spectrum systemic fungicide developed by Insecticides India Limited (IIL), combining two powerful active ingredients: Hexaconazole 4% and Carbendazim 16% in a Suspension Concentrate (SC) formulation. This dual-action fungicide provides both protective and curative activity against a wide range of fungal diseases affecting field crops, vegetables, fruits, and plantation crops.

The combination of Hexaconazole (a Triazole group fungicide) and Carbendazim (a Benzimidazole group fungicide) works synergistically to attack fungi at two different points. Hexaconazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis, which is essential for fungal cell wall formation, while Carbendazim disrupts fungal cell division (mitosis). This dual mode of action ensures comprehensive disease control and helps reduce the risk of resistance development.

IIL Sofia is suitable for crops including Rice, Wheat, Tur (Pigeon Pea), Peas, Groundnut, Coffee, Tea, Chilli, Tomato, Apple, Mango, and Grapes. It effectively controls major fungal diseases such as blast, sheath blight, rust, blight, powdery mildew, downy mildew, leaf spot, and anthracnose. The SC formulation ensures easy mixing, uniform coverage, and quick absorption into the plant system for long-lasting protection.

Key Benefits

  • Dual-action disease control – Provides both curative action on existing infections and preventive protection against new fungal attacks, ensuring complete disease management.
  • Broad-spectrum effectiveness – Controls a wide range of fungal diseases including blast, sheath blight, rust, blight, powdery mildew, downy mildew, leaf spot, and anthracnose across multiple crop groups.
  • Systemic protection – Quickly absorbed and translocated within the plant system, delivering deep protection that reaches hidden infection sites.
  • Phyto-tonic effect – Enhances plant health and vigor, keeping leaves green longer (delayed senescence), which supports better grain filling and improved crop quality.
  • Long-lasting residual activity – Provides extended protection, reducing the number of repeated sprays needed and making it cost-effective for farmers.
  • Rainfast within 2-4 hours – Quickly absorbed by the plant, so light rain shortly after application does not reduce effectiveness.
  • Easy-to-use SC formulation – Suspension Concentrate formulation mixes easily with water, provides uniform coverage, and is simple to apply as a foliar spray.

How It Works

IIL Sofia works through a synergistic dual mechanism that attacks fungal pathogens at two critical points in their lifecycle. Hexaconazole, belonging to the Triazole chemical group (FRAC Group 3), acts as a sterol biosynthesis inhibitor. It blocks the production of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. Without ergosterol, fungal cells cannot maintain their structural integrity, leading to cell rupture and death. This action is systemic — Hexaconazole is absorbed by the leaves and moves upward within the plant's vascular system, reaching new growth and hidden infection sites.

Carbendazim, belonging to the Benzimidazole chemical group (FRAC Group 1 / MBC), works as a mitosis inhibitor. It disrupts fungal cell division by binding to tubulin proteins, preventing the formation of the spindle fibers needed for cell division. This stops the fungus from reproducing and spreading within the plant tissue. Carbendazim provides both contact activity on the plant surface and systemic movement within the plant.

Together, these two active ingredients provide a "double-engine" effect: Hexaconazole stops the fungus from building cell walls, while Carbendazim shuts down cell division. This combination ensures that spores cannot germinate, existing mycelium cannot grow, and the fungal lifecycle is completely broken. The SC formulation ensures fine micro-particles that cover leaf surfaces evenly, providing both preventive protection against new spores and curative action against existing infections.

When to Use

For best results, apply IIL Sofia at the early stages of disease development or as a preventive spray before disease becomes severe. For Rice, spray at the tillering or panicle initiation stage to protect against blast and sheath blight. For Wheat, apply at the first signs of rust or blight infection. For fruit crops like Mango and Grapes, spray before flowering or at the onset of disease symptoms. For Vegetables like Tomato and Chilli, apply during the vegetative stage when early or late blight symptoms appear. Avoid spraying during rain, strong winds, or extreme heat. Early morning or late evening application is recommended for better coverage and absorption.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare protective gear – Wear gloves, face mask, and protective eyewear before handling the product.
  2. Calculate the required quantity – Measure 400 ml of IIL Sofia for each acre of crop. For a 15-litre knapsack sprayer, use approximately 30-40 ml of product.
  3. Mix with water – Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Add the measured quantity of IIL Sofia and stir or shake well. Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly.
  4. Check the mixture – Ensure the solution is uniformly mixed. The SC formulation disperses easily in water.
  5. Apply as foliar spray – Spray evenly on both upper and lower leaf surfaces using a hollow cone nozzle for fine mist coverage. Ensure complete coverage of the plant canopy.
  6. Timing of application – Apply during early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower and wind is calm for better coverage and absorption.
  7. Post-application care – Wash spray equipment thoroughly after use. Do not drain leftover spray solution into water bodies.
  8. Clean up – Wash hands, face, and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after application.

Compatibility

IIL Sofia is compatible with common insecticides like Imidacloprid. However, do NOT mix with Copper-based fungicides or Bordeaux mixture as incompatibility may occur. Before mixing with any new product, conduct a jar test by mixing small quantities of both products in water to check for any adverse reaction (settling, clumping, or separation). Always add products in the correct order: first add water, then add wettable powders/granules, followed by SC formulations, and finally emulsifiable concentrates.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, face mask, and protective goggles during handling, mixing, and spraying.
  • Avoid contact: Prevent contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Do not inhale the spray mist.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying the product.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food, feed, and children's reach.
  • Environmental safety: Do not apply near fish ponds, water bodies, or areas with active bee activity. Do not drain paddy water into fish ponds.
  • Disposal: Triple rinse empty containers and dispose of according to local regulations. Do not reuse containers for any purpose.
  • First aid: In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If eye contact occurs, rinse with clean water for 15 minutes. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention. No specific antidote is available — treat symptomatically.
