Crystal Lara 909 is a broad-spectrum insecticide from Crystal Crop Protection, formulated as a combination of Chlorpyriphos 50% and Cypermethrin 5% in an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) formulation. Known in the market as the "505" mixture, this product is designed to tackle both chewing and sucking pests that commonly damage major field crops like Cotton and Paddy (Rice).
The product works through two powerful modes of action — contact and stomach poisoning — making it effective against a wide range of pests including bollworms, stem borers, leaf folders, aphids, jassids, thrips, and whiteflies. The dual chemistry helps manage pest resistance, as the two active ingredients attack the insect nervous system through different pathways. Chlorpyriphos provides long-lasting residual control while Cypermethrin delivers rapid knockdown action, giving farmers a reliable, cost-effective solution for complex pest problems.
Crystal Lara 909 also offers a unique fumigant (vapor) action that helps reach pests hiding in hard-to-reach areas like curled leaves, cotton bolls, and leaf folds. This makes it especially useful for crops with dense canopies or where pests tend to hide inside plant structures. With proper application at the right pest stage, farmers can expect effective control and protection of their crop yield.
Key Benefits
- Dual-action control — Combines contact and stomach poison action to kill pests that touch the spray or feed on treated plant parts
- Rapid knockdown — Cypermethrin provides immediate shock effect, stopping pests from feeding within minutes of contact
- Long residual protection — Stays active on the plant for 10 to 14 days, reducing the need for frequent re-spraying
- Vapor fumigant action — Chlorpyriphos releases vapors that penetrate dense canopies and reach hidden pests inside bolls, leaf folds, and curled leaves
- Broad-spectrum coverage — Controls both sucking pests (aphids, jassids, thrips, whiteflies) and chewing pests (bollworms, stem borers, leaf folders) in a single spray
- Resistance management — Two different chemical groups (Organophosphate + Pyrethroid) help manage pests that may have developed resistance to single-molecule insecticides
- Cost-effective solution — Economical "505" formulation provides reliable pest control at a budget-friendly cost per acre
How It Works
Crystal Lara 909 attacks the insect nervous system through two complementary mechanisms, making it extremely difficult for pests to survive.
Cypermethrin (Synthetic Pyrethroid - IRAC Group 3A): Upon contact with the pest, Cypermethrin keeps the sodium channels in the insect's nerve cells open. This causes continuous nerve firing, leading to immediate hyperexcitation, tremors, and rapid paralysis. This is known as the "shock effect" or knockdown action — pests stop feeding and die within minutes of exposure.
Chlorpyriphos (Organophosphate - IRAC Group 1B): Once ingested or absorbed through the pest's body, Chlorpyriphos inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). This causes a buildup of acetylcholine at nerve junctions, leading to continuous nerve signal transmission, exhaustion, and eventual paralysis and death. This provides the long-lasting residual effect.
Synergistic action: The combination works in two ways — the vapor action of Chlorpyriphos flushes pests out of hiding places, while the contact action of both chemicals kills them on the spot. This multi-pronged attack ensures that even if a pest is resistant to one chemical class, it is still controlled by the other.

When to Use
Apply Crystal Lara 909 at the initial stages of pest infestation — ideally when eggs are hatching (initial instar stage) or when the pest population reaches the Economic Threshold Level (ETL). For bollworms in cotton, the recommended trigger is when about 5% of bolls show damage. Avoid prophylactic (preventative) spraying; use the product only when pest presence is confirmed through regular field scouting.
For best results, apply during early morning or late evening hours. Avoid spraying during peak sunlight hours or when rain is expected, as heavy rain immediately after application can reduce the residual effect. The product provides effective residual protection for 10 to 14 days under normal weather conditions.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Wear protective gear: Put on gloves, mask, goggles, and protective clothing before handling the product.
- Measure the dose: Use a clean measuring cup to take the recommended amount (200–400 ml per acre depending on crop and pest).
- Prepare the spray solution: Mix the measured dose in a small quantity of water first, then add to the full spray tank volume (200–400 litres per acre). Stir well.
- Apply as foliar spray: Spray evenly on the crop foliage, ensuring thorough coverage of both upper and lower leaf surfaces.
- Target hidden pests: For stem borers in paddy, direct the nozzle toward the base of the plant. For bollworms in cotton, ensure spray reaches the bolls and dense canopy areas.
- Avoid adverse conditions: Do not spray in windy conditions, during rain, or when bees are actively foraging (mid-day). Spray in late evening to protect pollinators.
- Clean equipment: Wash spray equipment thoroughly after use. Do not dispose of leftover solution near water bodies.
Compatibility
Crystal Lara 909 is compatible with most neutral fungicides such as Mancozeb and Carbendazim. Important warning: Do NOT mix with alkaline products like Bordeaux mixture or Lime Sulphur, as the alkaline nature will chemically break down the insecticide and make it ineffective. When mixing with other products, always do a jar test first to check for physical compatibility. Follow the correct mixing order: fill tank with water, add wettable powders first, then emulsifiable concentrates like Lara 909, and finally adjuvants if needed.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal protection: Always wear gloves, mask, goggles, and protective clothing (full sleeves and pants) during handling and application.
- During application: Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or spraying the product. Avoid inhalation of spray mist.
- After use: Wash hands, face, and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash protective clothing separately.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
- Environmental safety: Prevent spray drift to water bodies, non-target crops, and flowering plants. This product is highly toxic to bees — avoid spraying during flowering or when bees are active.
- Disposal: Dispose of empty containers as per local regulations. Do not reuse containers for any purpose.
- Antidote: In case of accidental poisoning, Atropine Sulphate with 2-PAM (Pralidoxime) is the physiological antidote. Seek immediate medical attention.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
Crystal Lara 909 is a Class II (Yellow Triangle) highly toxic substance. It is not recommended for small home gardens or indoor plants due to its strong smell and toxicity. The product is highly toxic to honeybees and other beneficial pollinators — avoid spraying during flowering periods or when bees are actively foraging. Do not allow spray drift to contaminate water bodies as it is toxic to aquatic organisms. Use with care in vegetable crops and always follow the recommended pre-harvest interval.
