Orbit is a selective herbicide from Insecticides (India) Ltd (IIL) containing Oxyfluorfen 23.5% EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate). It belongs to the Diphenyl Ether chemical group and works as a PPO inhibitor (IRAC Group 14). Orbit is designed to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds in important Indian crops like Onion, Tea, Potato, Groundnut, and Rice.
This herbicide offers both pre-emergence and post-emergence action. When applied to the soil, it creates a chemical barrier that stops weed seeds from germinating. When sprayed on young, actively growing weeds, it burns them down quickly—especially on sunny days. This dual-action makes Orbit a practical and cost-effective solution for farmers dealing with rising labour costs and labour shortages for manual weeding.
Orbit is a contact herbicide that stays on the soil surface and does not leach deep into the root zone, making it safe for bulb and root crops like Onion and Potato when used at the recommended dose and timing. It carries a Blue Triangle toxicity label (moderately toxic) and is available in pack sizes including 50 ml, 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, and 1 litre.
Key Benefits
- Dual-action weed control: Kills existing young weeds (contact action) and prevents new weed seeds from germinating (residual soil action) for complete protection.
- Fast visible results: On a sunny day, weeds start turning brown and drying out within 2–4 hours of application due to sunlight-activated mode of action.
- Long-lasting protection: Provides weed suppression for up to 30–40 days, covering the critical early growth stage of your crop when weeds cause maximum damage.
- Significant cost savings: One acre spray costs approximately ₹500–₹1,500 compared to ₹12,000 or more for manual weeding—saving you thousands of rupees per season.
- Safe for bulb and root crops: Stays on the soil surface and does not leach into the root zone, making it safe for Onion, Potato, and Garlic when used correctly.
- Positional selectivity: The chemical binds strongly to soil particles and does not move down to damage crop roots, ensuring crop safety.
- Flexible application timing: Can be used both before weeds emerge (pre-emergence) and after they have appeared (post-emergence) in the early stages.
How It Works
Orbit works through a unique sunlight-activated mechanism that sets it apart from many other herbicides. The active ingredient, Oxyfluorfen, targets a specific enzyme called protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inside weed cells. This enzyme is essential for normal cell function in plants.
When Orbit is sprayed onto the soil or young weeds, it is absorbed into the weed's cells. Once inside, it blocks the PPO enzyme, causing harmful compounds to build up inside the cells. These compounds are normally harmless, but when sunlight hits the treated weed, they react explosively—producing reactive oxygen molecules that tear apart the cell membranes. This process is called photo-dynamic action.
Within hours of sunlight exposure, the weed cells collapse, the plant tissues dry out, and the weed dies. Because this is a contact action, the herbicide does not move (translocate) inside the plant. This means thorough and uniform spray coverage is essential for effective results. The residual action works differently—the chemical stays on the soil surface as a thin barrier, and when weed seeds try to germinate and push through this barrier, the young shoots absorb the chemical and die before they can emerge.

Recommended Dosage & Application
The Golden Rule: Always follow the dose per acre for accurate results. Ensure the soil is moist before application for the best chemical barrier effect.
| Crop | Application Timing | Dose (ml/Acre) | Water (L/Acre) | Dose (ml/Litre) | PHI (Days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Onion | Pre-emergence (0–3 days after sowing/transplanting) | 80–100 ml | 200 L | 0.5 ml | 7 |
| Onion | Post-emergence (20–25 days after transplanting) | 150–200 ml | 200 L | 0.75–1 ml | 7 |
| Tea | Pre-emergence / Post-emergence | 260–400 ml | 200–300 L | 1.3–2 ml | 15 |
| Potato | Pre-emergence | 170–340 ml | 200 L | 0.8–1.7 ml | - |
| Groundnut | Pre-emergence | 170–340 ml | 200 L | 0.8–1.7 ml | - |
| Rice (Paddy) | Pre-emergence | 260–400 ml | 200 L | 1.5–2 ml | - |
PHI = Pre-Harvest Interval: Minimum days to wait between last spray and harvesting.
When to Use
Pre-emergence application: Apply Orbit within 0–3 days of sowing or transplanting. The soil must be moist for the chemical to form an effective barrier on the surface. This timing is ideal for Onion, Potato, Groundnut, and Rice. If the soil is dry, give a light irrigation before spraying.
Post-emergence application: For Onion, apply 20–25 days after transplanting when weeds are young and actively growing. For best results, spray on a bright, sunny day because Orbit needs sunlight to activate its weed-killing power. Cloudy weather may slow down the results.
Key conditions for best results:
- Spray when weeds are small and young (2–4 leaf stage) for maximum effectiveness
- Ensure adequate sunlight after application
- Do not apply when rain is expected within 3–4 hours
- Avoid application during windy conditions to prevent spray drift to non-target areas
- Do not disturb the soil after spraying (pre-emergence) as it will break the chemical barrier
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Prepare the field: Ensure the soil is moist. If dry, give a light irrigation 1–2 days before spraying.
- Calculate the dose: Measure the correct amount of Orbit based on your crop and application timing using the dosage table above.
- Mix the solution: Fill the spray tank with half the required water. Add the measured Orbit quantity. Mix well. Add the remaining water and stir again until the solution is uniform.
- Check the nozzle: Use a Flat Fan or Flood Jet nozzle. Do NOT use a cone nozzle as it will not give uniform coverage.
- Spray evenly: Apply the mixture uniformly over the soil surface (pre-emergence) or over young weeds (post-emergence). Ensure complete coverage.
- Clean up: After spraying, wash the spray tank and all equipment thoroughly with clean water. Do not dispose of wash water near water bodies or wells.
- Post-application care: Do not hoe, dig, or disturb the soil after pre-emergence spraying, as this will break the chemical barrier and allow weeds to grow.
Compatibility
Orbit can be tank-mixed with graminicides (grass-killing herbicides) like Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl for broader weed control—especially in Onion where both broadleaf and grassy weeds are a problem. This combination allows you to handle both weed types in a single spray. Always ensure the solution is well-agitated during mixing and application. If mixing with other products, perform a jar test first to check for any adverse reaction.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a mask, and safety goggles during mixing and spraying. Oxyfluorfen is a known severe eye irritant—protect your eyes at all times.
- During application: Avoid inhalation of spray mist. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or spraying the product.
- After use: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash your clothes separately.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Environmental safety: Avoid spray drift to water bodies, ponds, and non-target crops. Do not contaminate irrigation water or drainage channels.
- Wind conditions: Do not spray during strong winds to prevent drift to neighbouring fields.
Side Effects & Phytotoxicity
- Avoid spraying during the "flag leaf" stage of Onion (when the crop is just emerging from the soil) to prevent scorching or crop injury.
- If the soil is disturbed after pre-emergence application, the chemical barrier breaks and weed control will be reduced.
- Heavy rain immediately after application may reduce efficacy. Orbit is generally rainfast after 3–4 hours.
- Use only at recommended doses. Overdosing may cause crop injury or increase residue levels.
PHI / REI & Storage
- PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval): Onion – 7 days; Tea – 15 days
- Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture when stored under proper conditions
- Storage conditions: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in use.
