Fertilizer Management
For optimal yield, follow these fertilizer recommendations:
- N:P:K Application - Apply 48:24:20 kg/acre for best results.
- Basal Dose - Apply all Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K) and 1/3 of Nitrogen (N) at sowing.
- Split Nitrogen Application:
- First dose: Between 35-40 days after sowing.
- Second dose: At the time of tassel emergence.
- Zinc Supplementation - Apply Zinc Sulphate at 10 kg/acre as basal application.
- Organic Matter - Use 8 mt/acre of FYM/rotten compost for improved soil fertility and yield.
Irrigation Schedule
Regular irrigation is crucial, ideally every 6-10 days, depending on soil type and climate. Avoid excessive water or stagnation, particularly within the first 30 days. Critical irrigation stages:
- Just after germination
- Knee height stage
- Pollination stage
- Grain development stage
Note: Maintaining moisture during pollination to grain filling stage enhances disease resistance and improves overall yield. In heavy soils, prefer light and frequent irrigation rather than heavy watering.
Safety and Precautions
- Avoid waterlogging in early crop stages to prevent root damage.
- Ensure proper weed management to reduce competition for nutrients.
- Use certified seeds to prevent genetic variability in yield.
- Store seeds in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
