IIL Sumo is a granular systemic insecticide and nematicide from Insecticides India Limited, containing Carbofuran 3% CG (Encapsulated Granules). It is designed to protect crops from a wide range of soil-dwelling insects, foliar pests, and harmful nematodes. The granular formulation makes it easy to apply directly to the soil without mixing with water, and the encapsulated technology ensures a slow, controlled release of the active ingredient for extended protection.
Once applied to the soil, Sumo is absorbed through plant roots and moves systemically throughout the plant. It works through contact, stomach, and systemic action to control pests like stem borers, shoot flies, termites, root grubs, gall midge, brown plant hopper, and root-knot nematodes. It is widely used in crops such as paddy, sugarcane, maize, groundnut, banana, brinjal, and tea. The product is also known under the Tractor Brand and is trusted by Indian farmers for its dual-action as both an insecticide and nematicide.
Sumo carries a Red Triangle toxicity label (Highly Hazardous), so proper safety measures must be followed during handling and application. It is available in 1 kg and 5 kg packs and is a cost-effective solution for protecting crops during the critical early growth stages.
Key Benefits
- Dual protection – Works as both an insecticide and nematicide, controlling insects and root-damaging nematodes in a single application.
- Long-lasting control – Encapsulated granule technology releases the active ingredient slowly, providing protection for 30 to 40 days during the critical vegetative stage.
- Systemic action – Absorbed by roots and moves upward inside the plant, killing hidden pests like stem borers that sprays cannot reach.
- Triple mode of action – Kills pests through contact, stomach poisoning, and systemic movement, ensuring comprehensive control.
- Rainfast protection – Once absorbed by the plant, the active ingredient stays inside and cannot be washed away by rain or irrigation.
- Promotes healthier crops – By controlling nematodes and soil pests, it supports better root growth, nutrient uptake, and often results in visibly greener plants (phytotonic effect).
- Easy to apply – No water mixing required. Granules can be broadcast directly or mixed with sand/fertilizer for uniform distribution.
How It Works
IIL Sumo contains Carbofuran, which belongs to the carbamate group of insecticides (IRAC Group 1A). It works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the pest's nervous system. This enzyme is essential for normal nerve signal transmission. When inhibited, it causes a buildup of acetylcholine, leading to overstimulation of nerves, paralysis, and eventually death of the pest.
Sumo attacks pests through three pathways:
- Systemic action: When applied to soil, the granules dissolve in soil moisture and are absorbed by plant roots. The active ingredient travels upward through the plant's vascular system (xylem), reaching stems and leaves. Pests feeding inside the plant, such as stem borers, ingest the toxin and die.
- Contact action: Soil-dwelling pests like termites, white grubs, and root grubs die when they physically touch the granules or the treated soil water.
- Stomach action: Pests that chew on plant tissues or ingest soil particles containing the granules are poisoned from within.
The encapsulated granule (CG) formulation ensures the chemical is released slowly into the soil, providing extended protection. The effect is rapid — pests stop feeding almost immediately after exposure.

Note: Sumo is a granular product. Do not mix with water for spraying. For paddy, maintain 2-3 inches of standing water for 3-4 days after application. For dryland crops, apply near the root zone and irrigate immediately.
When to Use
Apply Sumo during the early crop stages when pests first appear or as a preventive measure at sowing/transplanting time. For paddy, apply 15-30 days after transplanting in the main field, or 7 days before transplanting in the nursery. For maize and sugarcane, apply at sowing time or during early vegetative growth. For groundnut and brinjal, apply at sowing or before transplanting. Ensure the soil has adequate moisture (standing water for paddy, moist soil for other crops) to help dissolve the granules and allow root absorption. The product provides protection for 30-40 days, covering the critical early growth period when crops are most vulnerable to soil pests and stem borers.
Step by Step Usage Instructions
- Wear protective gear: Put on gloves, a mask, and goggles before handling the product. This is a Red Triangle (highly hazardous) product.
- Calculate the dose: Measure the required quantity based on your crop and acreage using the dosage table above.
- Optional mixing: For uniform distribution, mix the granules with dry sand or fertilizer. Do not mix with alkaline materials like lime.
- Apply to soil: Broadcast the granules evenly over the field (for paddy) or apply in furrows/planting pits (for other crops). Do not use as a foliar spray.
- Ensure moisture: For paddy, maintain 2-3 inches of standing water for 3-4 days. For other crops, irrigate immediately after application to activate the granules.
- Post-application care: Wait at least 24 hours before any field operations. Wash hands and clothes thoroughly after application.
- Dispose safely: Destroy used packaging properly. Do not reuse empty bags for storing food or feed.
Compatibility
Sumo can be mixed with sand or urea for easier and more uniform broadcasting in the field. However, do not mix with highly alkaline materials such as lime, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the product. Always follow local recommendations and conduct a small compatibility test if mixing with unfamiliar substances.
Precautions & Safety
- Personal protection: Always wear gloves, mask, and goggles while handling and applying Sumo. Do not touch granules with bare hands.
- Avoid inhalation: Do not breathe in the dust from the granules. Use a mask during application.
- Hygiene: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Change and wash clothes separately after application.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, feed, and drinking water. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
