Overview

Tadaaki is a broad-spectrum systemic carbamate insecticide and nematicide manufactured by Insecticides (India) Limited. It contains Benfuracarb 3% in granular (GR) formulation. Tadaaki is designed to provide effective, long-lasting control of important insect pests and nematodes, especially in paddy (rice) crops.

What makes Tadaaki different from ordinary insecticides is its unique "pro-insecticide" chemistry. The active ingredient is chemically masked to be safer during handling and only activates into its potent form after the pest ingests it. When applied to standing water in paddy fields, the granules dissolve and are absorbed by the roots. The medicine then travels systemically through the plant's vascular system, reaching the stem and leaves. This turns the entire plant into a protective fortress against hidden pests like the Yellow Stem Borer (which causes Dead Hearts and White Ears) and the Brown Planthopper (BPH).

Tadaaki is especially valuable for paddy farmers because it works from the inside out. Unlike foliar sprays that only cover the surface, this granular insecticide reaches pests that bore inside the stem or feed at the base of the plant where sprays cannot reach. Its slow-release formulation provides extended protection during the critical vegetative stage, reducing the need for frequent re-application. The product is applied by broadcasting in standing water, making it rain-fast and well-suited for the wet conditions typical of rice cultivation.

Key Benefits

  • Systemic inside-out protection: Absorbed by roots and moves up through the plant, killing stem borers and other hidden pests that sprays cannot reach.
  • Long-lasting control: The slow-release granular formulation provides extended protection for up to 2-3 weeks, reducing the need for frequent re-application.
  • Pro-insecticide safety: Safer to handle during application because the active ingredient activates only after the pest ingests it.
  • Rain-fast and weather-proof: Applied into standing water and absorbed by roots, it does not wash away like foliar sprays during rain.
  • Effective against multiple pests: Controls Yellow Stem Borer (Dead Heart/White Ear), Brown Planthopper (BPH), and Rice Leaf Folder in paddy.
  • Crop-safe (non-phytotoxic): Safe for rice plants when used as directed — no leaf tip burn or stunting.
  • Easy application: Simple broadcasting method — can be mixed with sand or urea for uniform spreading.

How It Works

Tadaaki works through a unique two-step "pro-insecticide" mechanism. The Benfuracarb molecule is chemically designed to be stable and less toxic during handling and application. Once the product is broadcast in standing water, the granules dissolve and the active ingredient is absorbed by the plant roots through the water. It then moves upward through the plant's xylem (water-conducting tissue) in a process called systemic translocation. This means the medicine reaches every part of the plant — the stem, leaves, and growing points — making the entire plant toxic to feeding insects.

When a pest like a Stem Borer larva feeds on the treated plant tissue, enzymes in the insect's body cleave the N-S bond in Benfuracarb, releasing the active metabolite called Carbofuran. This activated form then binds to the Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme in the insect's nervous system. AChE is responsible for breaking down nerve signals after they are transmitted. By blocking this enzyme, the nerve signals keep firing continuously, causing uncontrolled nerve impulses. This leads to tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and finally rapid death of the pest.

Because Tadaaki works as both a stomach poison (when the pest eats the plant) and a systemic insecticide (moving inside the plant), it is highly effective against hidden pests like stem borers that live inside the plant stem, as well as sucking pests like Brown Planthoppers that feed on plant sap at the base.

Recommended Dosage & Application

Paddy (Rice)13.3 kg*Standing water (2-3 inches)Broadcast20 Days

Note: The official CIBRC dosage is 33 kg/hectare (approximately 13.3 kg/acre). Always refer to local agricultural extension guidelines as field practices may vary.

When to Use

Apply Tadaaki between 15 to 30 Days After Transplanting (DAT) of paddy seedlings. This timing is critical because it coincides with the early infestation period of Yellow Stem Borer and Brown Planthopper. Applying at this stage helps prevent "Dead Hearts" (damage caused by young stem borer larvae feeding on the central shoot) and later-stage "White Ears" (damaged panicles).

Farmers should also apply at the first signs of pest incidence. Look for symptoms like wilting central leaves (Dead Hearts), hopper burn patches at the base of plants, or folded leaves indicating Leaf Folder activity. Early intervention gives the best results. Do not wait until the infestation becomes severe.

The product works best when there is 2-3 inches of standing water in the field during and after application. This allows the granules to dissolve properly and the roots to absorb the active ingredient. Avoid applying in dry field conditions.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Check water level: Ensure the paddy field has 2-3 inches of standing water before application.
  2. Measure the dose: Weigh the required quantity — 13.3 kg of Tadaaki granules per acre.
  3. Mix for uniform spreading (optional): Mix the granules with an equal amount of dry sand or urea fertilizer to help spread the small quantity evenly across the entire field.
  4. Broadcast evenly: Walk through the field and broadcast the granules uniformly by hand or using a spreader. Ensure even coverage across the whole area.
  5. Hold water (crucial step): After application, impound (hold) the standing water in the field for 3-4 days. Do NOT drain or irrigate during this time. This allows the granules to dissolve completely and the roots to absorb the medicine.
  6. Wear safety gear: Use gloves, a mask, and goggles while handling and applying the product. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after application.

Precautions & Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear gloves, a face mask, and goggles while handling and applying Tadaaki granules.
  • Hygiene: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling the product. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application.
  • Storage: Store the product in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and children's reach. Keep in original container with lid tightly closed.
  • Environmental safety: Benfuracarb is toxic to aquatic life including fish. Do not use in rice-fish farming systems. Avoid draining treated water into fish ponds, canals, or water bodies.
  • Water management: Do not allow treated water to flow into nearby ponds, rivers, or wells. Manage field water responsibly.

Side Effects & Phytotoxicity

Tadaaki is safe for rice plants when used as directed at the recommended dose. It does not cause leaf tip burn, stunting, or other phytotoxic effects on paddy. However, the product is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Do not apply near fish ponds or in fields where fish farming is practiced alongside rice cultivation.
