IIL Torry is a systemic, selective, post-emergence herbicide from Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL), specifically designed for weed management in maize crops. It contains Tembotrione 34.4% SC, an active ingredient from the Triketone chemical group. Torry works by inhibiting the 4-HPPD enzyme in weeds, which disrupts the synthesis of plant pigments and chlorophyll. This leads to visible bleaching of weeds followed by drying and death, usually within 3–5 days of application.

Torry is effective against a broad spectrum of grassy and broadleaf weeds commonly found in maize fields, including Echinochloa spp., Trianthema portulacastrum, and Brachiaria sp. The formulation includes a built-in safener (Isoxadifen-ethyl) that protects the maize crop from herbicidal stress, making it a safe and reliable choice for farmers. With a low dosage requirement of just 115 ml per acre, it offers a cost-effective solution for clean, healthy fields and better crop yields.

For best results, Torry should be applied within 12–15 days after sowing, when weeds are at the 2–4 leaf stage and soil moisture is adequate. It is applied as a foliar spray using a flood-jet or flat-fan nozzle. The product is intended for agricultural use only and is restricted in the state of Kerala.

Key Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum control of both grassy and broadleaf weeds in a single application
  • Selective action that targets weeds without harming the maize crop, thanks to built-in safener technology
  • Fast visible results — weeds start bleaching and dying within 3–5 days of spraying
  • Systemic mode of action ensures the herbicide moves inside weed tissues for complete kill from within
  • Low dosage requirement (115 ml/acre) makes it a cost-effective weed management option
  • Extended residual activity provides protection for up to 15 days, reducing weed regrowth
  • Easy to apply with standard flood-jet or flat-fan nozzles using common spray equipment

How It Works

Torry contains Tembotrione 34.4% SC, which belongs to the Triketone group of herbicides. Its mode of action is based on inhibiting the 4-HPPD enzyme (4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase), a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of plastoquinone and tocopherols in plants. When this enzyme is blocked, the production of protective plant pigments and chlorophyll is disrupted.

As a systemic herbicide, Torry is absorbed by the foliage and translocates within the weed's vascular system, reaching growing points and meristematic tissues. The disruption of pigment synthesis leads to a characteristic bleaching effect on the leaves of susceptible weeds. Without chlorophyll and protective pigments, the weeds cannot carry out photosynthesis effectively. This results in gradual drying, wilting, and complete death of the target weeds within a short period.

The formulation includes Isoxadifen-ethyl, a safener that selectively protects the maize crop by enhancing its ability to metabolize the herbicide. This ensures that while weeds are controlled effectively, the maize crop remains healthy and stress-free throughout the growing season.

Dilution: Mix 0.57 ml of Torry per litre of water. For a 15-litre knapsack sprayer, use approximately 8.6 ml of product.

Note: Use a surfactant/sticker at 2 ml per litre of water for better coverage and effectiveness.

When to Use

Torry is a post-emergence herbicide and should be applied when weeds are young and actively growing for best results. The ideal application window is within 12–15 days after sowing of maize, when weeds are at the 2–4 leaf stage. At this stage, weeds are most vulnerable to the herbicide's action, and the maize crop is established enough to tolerate the treatment.

Apply under optimum soil moisture conditions to ensure good herbicide uptake and activity. Choose a non-windy day with no rain forecast to avoid spray drift or wash-off. Early morning or late afternoon hours are ideal for spraying, as cooler temperatures reduce evaporation and improve herbicide absorption. Avoid application during extreme heat, strong winds, or when rain is expected within a few hours.

Step by Step Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare the sprayer: Use a clean sprayer fitted with a flood-jet or flat-fan nozzle for uniform coverage.
  2. Measure the dose: Take 115 ml of Torry herbicide for each acre of maize field.
  3. Mix with water: Add the measured quantity to 200 litres of clean water. For a 15-litre knapsack, use about 8.6 ml of product.
  4. Add surfactant: Mix a sticker or surfactant at 2 ml per litre of water to improve droplet retention and coverage on weed foliage.
  5. Stir thoroughly: Ensure the solution is well mixed before pouring into the spray tank.
  6. Spray evenly: Apply as a foliar spray, ensuring complete coverage of the target weeds. Avoid spraying directly on the maize whorl.
  7. Clean equipment: After spraying, rinse the sprayer thoroughly with clean water. Do not dispose of rinsate near water bodies.

Precautions & Safety

  • Wear protective gloves, a face mask, and goggles while handling and spraying the product.
  • Avoid inhalation of spray mist and contact with skin, eyes, or clothing.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke during application.
  • Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after use.
  • Store the product in a cool, dry place away from food, animal feed, and children's reach.
  • Do not reuse empty containers; dispose of them safely as per local guidelines.
  • Avoid spray drift to nearby water bodies, non-target crops, and areas with beneficial insects.
  • In case of poisoning: move the person to fresh air, wash contaminated skin with soap, rinse eyes with clean water, and consult a physician immediately. No specific antidote is available; treat symptomatically.
